"The Shot Tower"
forgotten Fayette Iowa history
The three story brick mansion called 'the Shot Tower' by old time residents
was located 3 bks west of Main.St, on the north-side of Water St, Fayette, Fayette County, Iowa.
'The Shot Tower' burned down in the 19mid-teens, with little history left.
The property bordered the 'Shaffer Hole' to the north on the Volga River.

Page Chronology:  2020April29---A quest was started to gain an understanding of the forgotten history to a Fayette.IA building when an actual picture was provided by Rick.Hofmeyer, FHS'73, retired science teacher from Fayette.IA.  2020May07---A page of data, notes, speculations was initially uploaded.  The thinking right now is that Robert Alexander may have commissioned the building for his home in the 1860+/- timeframe.  He died 1862Jan.  Lyman Shaffer may have taken over the property as he owned land in the area and the Volga River behind/north of 'the Shot Tower' was known as the 'Shaffer Hole.'  Although a fairly large farmer in the area Lyman apparently got into financial difficulty and moved to Kansas for a restart in 1868.  Rev. Mumby, Cong. minister, came/bought the home in 1888.  Thomas D. Peterman took over the home in 1898, then left for CA 1908, the home selling sometime after 1908, but to whom.  Maybe Frank E. Stranahan, as he owned the lot on the 1916plat.  The date of the fire must be in the mid-teens but has not been found doing paper searches.   Frank Stranahan's brother Warren got the lot in 1919, took down the upper brick, made the bottom floor into a garage/shop, and built a home on the lot to the south of 'the Shot Tower.'  Transfers & abstracts would be needed to tract the ownership/history.

Notes, facts, assumptions, ponderings
"Chats with Old Timers" stated Robert Alexander had 'the Shot Tower' built,
thus the initial premise upon which the timeline was built without having abstract or transfer records.

...From 'Chats With Old timers,'  by O.W. Stevenson, Fayette attorney (1942 paper article, with some edits/bz):
......
Methodists Built the Shot Tower; George Hartman tells one which must be of a later date.  He quoted Edward Kelly (John's father, was in Westfield village by 1860 census), an old Fayette stone mason who was for many years president of the local public school board. When Kelly came to Fayette, Robert Alexander was having erected the imposing three story stone and brick building that until its destruction by fire was known as "The Shot Tower," a building with quite a history that should be written up some time.  Mr. Kelly applied for a job and Mr. Alexander asked, "Are you a Methodist?"  Kelly answered that he was not a member of the church.  Where upon he was told, "then I cannot hire you.  I am hiring only Methodists on this building."
......
Famous Folks Lived There:  But a lot of people who were not Methodists, good and not so good, afterward lived in that imposing building.  Hattie Barber, wife of Ike Barber and her sons Fred & George lived there when the boys were lynched, on the 2nd floor of the shot-tower.  In 1946 (?), the remaining first floor was the garage of the Paul McElroy home.  Mr/Mrs T.D. Peterman, pillars of the Congregational Church, and Rev. Robert Mumby, a pastor of the Congregational Church, had their homes there.
.......Why Was It Built?  The stone first story of that building is now (1942) the double garage at the Warren A. Stranahan home.  Robert Alexander never lived there.  Was it built for a home? Or did he dream that is might become a county court House?  I have often wondered what vision he had when he built such a mansion for those days, in Fayette?  Does anyone know? (O.W.Stevenson)

...1860+/-...Robert Alexander had 'the Shot Tower built.  He had financed much of the building of the block-limestone Seminary (UIU College Hall), construction starting in 1855May.
.......Note:  By the late 1850's, Fayette had a 'wealth' of stone masons, carpenters, smiths & craftsmen available from the completed Seminary project.  Also in operation were several local limestone quarry locations, a fairly large kiln on lime-kiln hill (ExSE of the Seminary), two brick yards (today, one west of the Klock's Island bridge and one where the sewage lagoon sits on Big.Rock.Rd), and local lumber/timber (the water mills in Westfield, Albany, Lima, plus a couple of traction steam mills)
......1862Jan20... Robert Alexander died, and never lived in the building, i.e. Chats.  It can be speculated Alexander had 'the Shot Tower' built for his last home.
...1868...
Lyman Shaffer , a fairly large early area farmer, owned the shot tower area along the Volga River before he moved to Kansas in 1868, apparently after suffering financial loss.
.......The fishing and swimming area behind the house was known as the 'Shaffer Hole.'  Lyman may have acquired 'the Shot Tower,' after Robert Alexander died Jan1862.

...1868>1888??Who owned 'the Shot Tower; how was it utilized??  After this time frame Ministers and/or patrons of the Contregational Church seem to be involved in ownership and utilization.

......1870's>early 1880's, Ike Barber of the Barber Boys of the Randalia area, who was hanged in 1883,  was living on the 2nd floor of 'the Shot Tower' with his wife Hattie and sons George & Fred. So apparently the structure was not being utilized as a one family home and at least some of it was being rented.

...1885Jun...West.Union.IA paper:  McKellar is enlarging the 'shot tower' and making a roomy shop of it.  ??Is this in Fayette??

...1888...Congregational Minister, Rev. Robert Mumby came to Fayette from Waucoma and would acquired 'the Shot Tower.'

....1892...Rev. Mumby moved from Fayette but retained 'the Shot Tower' until 1898.  Cong. Rev. Snowden apparently lived in 'the Shot Tower' after Rev. Mumby left Fayette.

......1896Plat...Congregational Church Rev. Robert Mumby owned 'the Shot Tower,' River Addition, Bk5, Lot1.  Mumby lived/preached in Fayette from 1888 to 1892, but retained ownership and revisited Fayette often and holding local services.

...1896May14...Fayette.IA paper:  Rev. Snowden made a trip to Decorah, but he left the shot-tower standing to hold his end of the town from tipping up.
......After Rev. Mumby left Fayette in 1892 to preach elsewhere, he retained ownership of 'the Shot Tower' which apparently was utilized as living quarters for Congregational Minister Rev. Snowdon and also part being rented or donated to others as the Ike Barber family.

...1896Nov05...Fayette.IA paper:  Friday night it had been intended by a number of young people to have a grand "Hallow'en Hunt," after the manner of last year in which so many happily participated, but the rain, mud and general frigidness of the atmosphere prevented.  However, they met at the old "Shot Tower" and went en masse to the Oddfellows' Hall and enjoyed themselves until 10pm, when all made a bee line for Canfield's Hotel (Fayette House on the SE corner of Main/State), where a supper had been arranged.

...1896Nov07...Fayette.IA paper:  Rev. Snowden moved his household goods to the building generally known amount the older citizens as the "Shot tower."  It is said Mr. Mumby, the owner, has moved to Dinsdale where he has done occasional preaching the past two years.

...1898Fall...Thomas D. Peterman, farmer & attorney from Brush Creek (Arlington.IA) bought 'the Shot Tower' from Rev. Mumby.  Peterman moved to Fayette. bought the Sherman House (hotel) on the SE corner of Main/Water, and set up his attorney & real estate office, renting out the remainder of the Sherman house for 2nd floor apartments and 1st floor grocery & telephone office.

...1898Sept01...Fayette.IA paper:  Thomas D. Peterman has purchased the three story Rev. Robert Mumby residence (known as the shot-tower by older citizens) and will occupy it as a home.  Mechanics are putting it in repair.  (River Addition, Bk 5, Lot 1)
......Note:  The Volga River just north of the Shot Tower was known as 'Shaffer's Hole,' as there was a sandy beach like area down/off the north facing bank and a wide shallow area leading into fairly deep water.  At one time male/female changing sheds were built on the high/north bank and the area also calling the swimming pool.  Swimming in the Shaffer's hole faded away during mid-1900's, but the name remained and it was a common fishing/skating spot especially for children.  Today (2000's) the asphalt hiking/biking trail transects the area along the south bank of the Shaffer Hole.

...1908Fall...The Peterman's moved to Pasadena.CA.  He owned 'the Shot Tower' from 1898>1909.
.......1909...'The Shot Tower' was sold by T.D. Peterman, probably sometime in 1909.  ???Who bought 'the Shot Tower' from Peterman; possibly Frank

...1905Sep07...Fayette.IA paper:  Edward Shaffer, a resident here 37 yrs ago when a young man of 18, arrived in Fayette and has since been looking up old acquaintance--except the big majority which is dead.  He is a son of Lyman and Margaret Shaffer, who were once owners of considerable land property in the vicinity of Fayette, the last being the "shot tower" property now owned by T.D. Peterman.  The Shaffer family left here in 1868, and settled in Kansas, where they retrieved the losses which they sustained in Illinois and Iowa.  Edward, Being now 55yrs old, was not recognized by the friends of his youth.

...1908Dec10...Fayette.IA paper:  Ad--Real.Estate for Sale, list includes;  T.D. Peterman, brick residence on Water street and office property on Main street.  Reuben Hunt property near railroad.  Contact O.W. Stevenson, Att'y, Fayette.IA.

...1908...Thomas D. Peterman sold his home (the 'Shot Tower', River.Addition, Bk 5, Lot 1; 405 W. Water.St) in Fayette and other county interest, then moved to Pasadena.CA, likely due to wife's failing health.  He had served as an UIU trustee, and mayor of Fayette for several terms.  He had been taking care of his invalid mother until her death in 1902, followed by care of his wife's failing health.  Thomas would pass away 1916, his wife 1920 at Pasadena.  He had considerable ability as a writer, especially prose and poetry, was a frequent contributor to area newspapers, involved with the Republican conventions, authored "History of Fayette county  in the '40's and '50's."   Thomas D. Peterman was a successful attorney and real-estate dealer (especially farm land) in Fayette from 1891 to 1906).  He owned the Shot Tower from 1898>1908.

...1909...???Who owned 'the Shot Tower' after Peterman?  Possibly Frank E. Stranahan, who shows as owner on the 1916 plat.

...19mid-teens...'The Shot Tower' was destroyed by fire.  Note: The date of the fire has not been found searching papers, bz/2020.

...1916...Plat:  Frank Elmore Stranahan, older brother of Warren Albert Stanahan, owned 'the Shot Tower' property.

...1919July...West.Union.IA paper:  Real Estate Transfer; Frank Elmore Stranahan to brother Warren Albert Stranahan, ('the Shot Tower' lot) part of Lot 1, Bk 5, River Addition to Fayette.IA, $1.
......Frank E. Stranahan n et al to Mary E. Stranahan, Lots 8,9,10, Bk6; Lots 4,5, Bk 4, in S.H. Robertson's Addiction; and part of Lot 5, Bk 6, River Addition; part of Lot 3, Bk 12, Fayette.IA, $1.
......Mary E. Stranahan to Warren Albert Stranahan Lots 8,9,10, Bk 5, J.E. Robertson's 2nd Add. to Fayette.IA, $1.

...1919July02...West.Union.IA paper:  The foundation of the new creamery at the south end of King.St is under construction.  Also Warren Stranahan is having the cellar dug (in front/south of 'the Shot Tower', for one of his new houses on the west lot of his newly acquired property on west Water street.  The ditch has been dug to extend the water to his residences, and the brick walls have been removed leaving the lower story of the old "shot tower' which they are roofing, and it will make a very pretty building, which will be used for a garage and work shop.

...1919July16...West.Union.IA paper:  H.I. Robinson sent around with a subscription paper on which he secured about $40, to build two dressing rooms on the river bank near the swimming pool.  This pool which is north of what was "the shot tower", and has been known to the boys for generations as "the Shaffer-hole", has become a very popular resort this summer.  The young as well as the older people are taking advantage of the bathing beach so near town.  The water in the pool is reasonably deep, and the sandy bottom of the river makes it a very satisfactory place in which to take the daily plunge.

...1919...Warren Stranahan built a house on 'the Shot Tower' lot, which he received from his brother Frank.  The burned out brick in the top two stories was taken down.  The limestone block first floor was utilized as a garage/shop, with the new house built south of 'the Shot Tower' location, closer to Water.St.

...2020...The Stranahan house still stands as does 'the Shot Tower' garage behind/north of the house, however one of the limestone walls is starting to collapse (R.Hofmeyer/2020).

Descendants of Robert Alexander

Chats With Old Timers by O.W. Stevenson, 1942Nov:  Robert Alexander, a founder of Upper Iowa University, was sometimes referred to as Colonel Alexander.  He served in the Black Hawk Indian war but was not a military officer.  The title of Colonel may have been applied to him because he was born and spent his early years in Kentucky, thus a 'Kentucky Colonel.'  Does anyone known if he spoke with a Kentucky accent or as a Hoosier from his residence in Indiana bor many years prior to 1849, when he came to Fayette.Co.IA?  There seems to be no picture or description of Mr. Alexander.  Walter Eugene Hunt (bz's g/father, b.1851Jun/Shutford.England, d.1945/Fayette.resident), as a small boy (age 4-10) saw Mr. Alexander often and remembers him as a large, handsome, dignified, black bearded, intelligent looking man.  Mr. Hunt says he looked very much like Henry Cantell Wallace, the first Wallace that was Secretary of Agriculture.  Mr. Hunt presented a large picture of Wallace, which he thinks might almost be considered a picture of Robert Alexander
...In about 1857Jan, Mr. Alexander had a religious experience which would classify him with what one author called a "Twice Born Man".  Stories about him before that time are different from stories of the later period (1857-1862).  An old pioneer tells that a young man who lived a while during the earlier period in the Alexander home (1850-1856) declared he never saw a man who could drink and 'carry' as much liquor as Alexander.  he is siad not to have attended church during a period of 40yrs and to have had no great liking for preachers, which home his wife Elizabeth however was on more friendly terms.  ...Note...Walter Eugene Hunt (bz's g/father, b.1851Jun/Shutford.England, d.1945/Fayette.resident) would have been 10yrs old when Robert Alexander died.  W.E. Hunt was the son of Ruben Sr. Hunt, 1823/Eng-1907, who came to Fayette.IA in 1855 as a master stone mason to work on the building of the Seminary (College Hall), and would finish as a head mason of the project, followed by traveling to Ames to lay brick on the first Iowa State College building, then returning to Fayette.  Reuben Sr. Hunt remained in Fayette the rest of his life, working as a mason/builder. His sons all apprenticed the mason skills, while following other professions.  Reuben St. Hunt and sons would have associated often with Robert Alexander before his death 1862Jan29.
