W.A. Andres, 73, Executive Who Led Growth of Dayton Hudson (New.York.Times, 2000Feb15)
...William A. Andres, who led the Dayton Hudson Corporation's expansion from a regional department store chain to a national retailing powerhouse, died Wednesday of lymphoma in Fort Myers, Fla. He was 73. Under the leadership of Mr. Andres from 1976 through the sharp recession of the early 1980's, Dayton Hudson grew from 400 stores to more than 1,000, and its revenues tripled to $5.6 billion. In 1978, a Forbes cover article said Mr. Andres was ''analytical and has a reputation for getting to the heart of matters quickly and decisively.'' He was the company's first chief executive who was not a member of the Dayton family. In his boldest bet, Mr. Andres quickly expanded Dayton Hudson's Target chain, correctly predicting that the future of retailing lay in large discount retailers situated mostly outside cities rather than full-priced urban department stores. Target now provides most of the company's more than $30 billion in annual sales, and on Jan. 30, Dayton Hudson changed its name to the Target Corporation. Mr. Andres rose rapidly through the ranks at Dayton Hudson. After joining the company as a management trainee selling robes in August 1958, he became a department manager in three months and a vice president less than five years later. By 1968 he was chairman and chief executive of Dayton. He gave up that post when the company bought the J. L. Hudson department store chain one year later. But his move aside was only temporary. He became president of the combined company in 1974, chief executive in 1976 and chairman in 1977. Outside the office, Mr. Andres was an avid golfer and gardener, his son Richard said. He was also an accomplished amateur magician. Outside the office, Mr. Andres was an avid golfer and gardener, his son Richard said. He was also an accomplished amateur magician. ''He actually put himself through undergraduate school doing magic'' in Fayette, Iowa, Richard Andres said. ''Magic ran through his whole life.'' His most memorable trick involved chopping the head off a volunteer with a mock guillotine. Mr. Andres graduated from Upper Iowa University in 1948 and earned a master's degree at the University of Pittsburgh one year later. He is survived by Betty, his wife of 52 years; three sons, Robert, of San Diego; Charles, of Brainerd, Minn.; and Richard, of Minnetonka, Minn.; and five grandchildren. ''They had a very strong partnership. It was always, 'Betty and Bill did this. Betty and Bill did that,' '' Richard said of his mother and father.

Obituary:  William 'Bill' Andres, 73 Dayton executive (Minneapolis StarTribune):
William (Bill) Andres, who in the seven years that he was chief executive officer of Dayton Hudson Corp. helped the retailer triple its size, has died. From 1976 to 1983, when he was chief executive officer, the company grew from 400 stores to more than 1,000 and from $1.9 billion in annual revenues to more than $5.6 billion. He was chairman of the board of directors until his retirement in 1985. (The company recently changed its name to Target Corp., and owns 1,245 stores in 44 states.)  "What better time to go than when things are going right?" he told the Star Tribune in 1985.  He had been suffering from lymphoma in the past five years, but he still was active in the community, said his son, Richard, of Minnetonka. He retired from his last board in May. Andres, who had been living in Fort Myers, Fla., died there Wednesday. He was 73.  During his tenure, the company sold nine large suburban shopping centers around the Twin Cities and Detroit for about $300 million, the Star Tribune reported in 1985. It then used the money to buy Mervyn's, a California-based department store. The company also diversified under his leadership, expanding such subsidiaries as Target and B. Dalton Bookseller, which was sold to Barnes & Noble in 1987.  "I think he gave the company unique leadership," Morgan Stanley retail analyst Walter Loeb told the Star Tribune in 1984. "He brought the kind of thinking that was forward-looking, and he changed the direction of the company." Andres became an executive in 1968. He later was the company's first CEO outside the Dayton family. In 1983 and 1984, he was the highest paid executive of 50 major Upper Midwest corporations, topping at $1,837,208, the Star Tribune reported. Richard Schall, a friend who was vice chairman when Andres was chairman of the executive committee, said Andres was respected by his peers and employees. "They really thought he was a marvelous leader," Schall said. "He was somebody who was able to disagree with you, and yet you would come away feeling like you had a fair audience."  He said Andres was a thoughtful person who did not make rash decisions. Andres made Dayton Hudson a "darling of Wall Street," Schall said.  He was born in Fayette, Iowa. He graduated from high school at 16 and then went to Upper Iowa University, where he received his bachelor's degree. He received his master's degree in business from the University of Pittsburgh and his doctorate in business from Upper Iowa. He moved to Minnesota in 1958 to work as a manager trainer at what was then the Dayton Co. He had a reputation for being a thoughtful board member who didn't dominate meetings, his friend said.  Involved in many things. He was a board member of Jostens, the St. Paul Companies, Munsingwear, International Multifoods, Exxon, Scott Paper, Hannaford, First Bank Systems and Northwestern Bell Telephone. In 1984, Andres was president of the United Way of Minneapolis Area. He had been in the organization since 1975.  "When he spoke up, people listened, and they learned that what he had to say was important," Schall said.  His son said he never was overwhelmed by his participation in organizations and businesses. "He took them as a challenge," his son said. "He was constantly studying the stock market and the business world."  In addition to his son, he is survived by his wife, Betty (nee Follett); two other sons, Robert of San Diego and Charles of Brainerd, Minn., and five grandchildren.  Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Fayette, Iowa. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Good Samaritan United Methodist Church, 5730 Grove St., Edina.

1979Aug09, Albert.Lea.MN paper:
...Merger of west coast chain 'Mervin's' with the thriving Midwest-based group, Dayton Hudson Corp, signals new competitive challenges for other retailers.  The Dayton Co. was launched by banker-turned-retailer George Draper Dayton in 1902, when he took over a foundering dry goods shop.  He chose a site other store-keepers thought too far away from the bustling horse/buggy setting near the Mississippi River (in Minneapolis).  Dayton, an astute operator, stood on a corner and counted people going by.  The same venturesome spirit made Dayton's the leading area department store within a few years. Two sons and six grandsons have piloted Dayton's in the founder's footsteps, with only two grandsons remaining active in the corporate executive ranks, Bruce and Kenneth.
...Dayton's Board Chairman is 51 year old, William A. 'Bill' Andres, who as a youth helped out in his father's dry goods store at Fayette, Iowa.  "I peddled bills and waited on customers," he recalled in an interview.  Bill attended on of the leading merchandising schools, at the University of Pittsburgh.  In 1958, Bill Andres joined Dayton's as a trainee, and Dec1979 was named chairman of Dayton Hudson.  The Dayton philosophy has rubbed off on Andres, who stresses that quality, value, fashion and dominance are the cornerstones of the store's success.

Note:  Everything between the Scobey building and the old Bank building were torn down aft 2010
and replaced with a funeral home to the north and a UIU lounge/restaurant/logo.shop to the south.

Do not trust as totally valid any tree/report data.  Often World Connect or Ancestry trees/data were utilized as a foundation upon which to add material gleamed from obits, articles, histories, biographies, stories, burials, censuses and other data collected.  My primary interest is generally the pioneer history and includes linking village and neighborhood surnames together for several of the early generations.  Family connections, locations and other data may have to be speculated in order to continue a complex series of inter-related projects.  My web pages are primarily personal study projects for note keeping, but can also jump start others.  I have a huge number of projects started and rarely return to edit/update material unless interest is rekindled.  Any web pages online are usually linked off the 'Index Page.'  Numerous projects are not put on web pages but are in draft form or in the form of photo albums on the 'Photo Hosting Site.'   I may have material for research use in storage, plus will/can upload other people's material if appropriate.
