Overview:
This page contains a descendent tree of
some material entered into my Family Tree Maker (FTM) files the last time I made
a review of the surnames discussed on the page. The primary objective of the
page is for personal use and note keeping. A secondary objective is to let
others jump start their research and save countless hours/dollars, or to add
data to past researchers' files regarding Fayette County, Iowa, surnames.
Fayette County notes, information and knowledge were utilized but do not trust
as totally valid any tree/report data, as internet material, contacts and
collected information was used to make speculations in order to continue various
parts of the history puzzle. The 'Photo Hosting' site may contain plats, histories and other
resource albums of interest. My harddrives may also have stored info for utilization. World Connect, Ancestry and other sites can be used to
expand tree data. Fayette Co, Iowa, burial listings,
obits, articles, notes were utilized to post data. Anyone with
information or corrections or with pics to upload can email iowaz@swbell.net
or iowaz@hotmail.com
Many of the
Ohio surnames are collateral families which I am continuously linking together
into my master FTM file for the Thompson clan which primarily settled in the
Brush Creek (Arlington), Wadena, Elgin, Brainard, Fayette, West Union area of
Fayette County, Iowa. Numerous Ohio and Fayette County, Iowa, surnames
came through early Clayton County, Iowa, or had family or friendship links.
Many of the New England surnames in Fayette County are also linked together as
they migrated westward.
During the winter of
2007, several surnames were reviewed
and researched as an off-shoot of a major history and
genealogy project regarding the pioneer neighborhoods of Brainard, Saltsgiver
and Pleasant Grove in Pleasant Valley and West Union Townships, Mill Grove in
Fairfield Twp, and the Spring Valley and Fayette area in Westfield Twp. of
Fayette
County, Iowa. No page is intended to be a comprehensive 'study'
of any one Fayette County, Iowa, surname.
World Connect, Ancestry and other sites can be used to expand tree data. For the Fayette Co, Iowa, Butler's, burial listings, obits, articles, notes were utilized to post data notes. Anyone with Butler information or corrections that they wish to add to this page or pics to upload can send data to iowaz@swbell.net or iowaz@hotmail.com
on to the Butler's from Baltimore Co, Maryland
Amanda Gist Butler, wife of Harrison Butler (son of Absolom Sr. Butler).
Amanda and Harrison had a major farm in the sec 5 area of Westfield Twp. just
east of the County Home.
Son Joseph farmed with and near his father Harrison, later moving into West
Union as a merchant.
Butler first cousins, Nicholas and Absolom
entered land east of West Union in the early 1850's.
Nicholas (1797-1886) Butler and Absolom (Absalom)(1789-1863) Butler are first cousins that removed from Ohio to Fayette County, Iowa; Absolom in 1849 and Nicholas in 1851. They were some of the very first white settlers in the area north of the neutral ground line (Indian buffer area) running through the middle of Fayette Co. from SE to NW, Below is an abbreviated tree to allow an overview of the relationship, with maps and a more complete tree following. World Connect, Ancestry and other sites can be used to expand tree data. For the Fayette Co, Iowa, Butler's, burial listings, obits, articles, notes were utilized to post data notes. Anyone with Butler information or corrections that they want to add to this page or pics to upload can send data to iowaz@swbell.net or iowaz@hotmail.com

Nicholas Butler, 1797/MD-1886/IA, came from Ohio to settle into his home
farm in the NW corner of section 12, West Union Township, Fayette County, Iowa,
in 1851, at an age of about 54y. Nicholas would farm in the 'Saltsgiver
nieghborhood,' adjacent to the Barnhouse family the remainder of his life.
Members of both families are buried on the boundary line between the two family
farms, some known burials, others unknown/unmarked.
Absolom Butler,
1789/MD-1863/IA, the first cousin of Nicholas
had removed from Ohio to West
Union Township in April of 1849, making the Absolom Butler family one of the
very first to legally move into the area of the Neutral Ground of Fayette
County, Iowa. Although Absolom does not show on the plat maps, in the 1852
census he was living/farming adjacent to cousin Nicholas in section 11/12, West
Union Twp, and farmed nearby until he died in 1863.
Numerous children and grandchildren of cousins Absolom and Nicholas
would make their living farming, as merchants, masons, carpenters, craftsmen,
railroad men, etc, in the vicinity of the 'Saltsgiver neighborhood between West
Union/Elgin and the 'Spring Valley neighborhood between West
Union/Fayette, plus near or in the villages of West Union, Elgin, Brainard,
Albany/Lima, Illyria, Wadena, Fayette, Randalia, Oelwein, Oran.
Notes within the full family tree further down the page may give more personal
information of some of the Fayette Co, IA, Butler offspring.

Above: a portion of Pleasant Valley Twp, Fayette Co, Iowa, 1879 Plat.
The NE portion of Fayette Co, from Andrea's 1875 Atlas of Iowa,
which gives an overview of timbered area, roads, rails, villages, etc.
Map overview:
Northern sections of Westfield Twp, Fayette County, Iowa, 1879 Plat
The central area along the Westfield and West Union Twp's became known as the
Spring Valley neighborhood.
Harrison Butler, son of Aboslom, farmed in section 5 of the Spring
Valley neighborhood.
Loren Butler (no relationship found yet) in 1854, came to section 4, 9,
Westfield Twp, 3+mi N of Fayette, was a mason, builder & farmed.
James W. Butler, brother of Loren was farming nearby in 1860 but later locations
for James W.
have not been found yet.
David and Adelia Butler (Loren's sister) Parsons came to Fayette
village in 1857 as a carpenter, builder, teacher, but also farmed in sec 4,
Westfield.
Three children of James Butler and Lydia Weaver move to Fayette County, Iowa: About 1854, Loren Butler, age 32, stone mason in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin, entered a farm on the northern edge of Westfield Twp, Fayette County, Iowa, probably in section 9, which would have been just east of Harrison Butler (son of Absolum, tree above, no link found to Loren's line, yet). Both Loren and Harrison Butler were part of the 'Spring Valley neighborhood' on the Westfield & West Union Township line. Loren's brother James W. Butler is found on the 1860 census farming close to Loren, so it is likely he came to Fayette County about the same time. In Jan of 1857, Loren's older sister Adelia Butler at age 43, and husband David Parsons (brother of Loren's wife Hannah Parsons) came from Illinois to Fayette village, as a carpenter and home builder for the remainder of his life. Loren Butler would remain on the farm in section 9 of Westfield and also be a mason builder until his death. Further information on Loren and Adelia's brother James W. has not been located after the 1860 census, however, land transactions for Fayette Co, have not been examined. Adelia Butler Parsons is my ggrandmother Parsons.

Note: Do not trust as totally valid any tree/report data. Often World Connect or Ancestry trees/data was utilized as a foundation upon which to add material gleamed from obits, articles, histories, biographies, stories, burials, censuses and other data collected. My primary interest is generally the pioneer history and includes linking village and neighborhood surnames together for several of the early generations. Often connections, locations and other data have to be speculated in order to continue a complex series of inter-related projects. My web pages are primarily personal study projects for note keeping, but can also jump start others. I have a huge number of projects started and rarely return to edit/update material unless interest is rekindled. Any web pages online are usually linked off the 'Index Page.' Numerous projects are not put on web pages but are in draft form or in the form of photo albums on the 'Photo Hosting Site.' I may have material for research use in storage, plus will/can upload other people's material if appropriate.
