The Levi line settled 1860+ to 1873, in the Otsego
neighborhood in SE Jefferson.Twp, 4+mi E of the Hiram Carpenter line.
No direct ties to the two lines have been found, however both lines area from
the Herkimer.Co.NY area.
There are no known burials for the Levi Caprenter line in Fay.Co.IA, and no
Carpenter burials in Otsego Cem.

that are left, date back to 1861.
It is one of the largest pioneer cemeteries in Fayette.Co.IA. The cemetery
was re-dedicated in May 2012, after a three year restoration project by
volunteers of the Fayette.Co Pioneer Cemetery Commission. Location:
1230 Neon Road, 2mi SE of Oelwein.

.....John Woods opened the first store at 'Jefferson' (Otsego), in the NW corner
of Sec 34 (In the early 1850's, Burch in Sec 21, had kept a few goods on hand
for travelers but probably could not be considered a mercantile business).
.....B.H. Bennett opened a 2nd store in a few years, followed by a 3rd by H.S.
Day.
....Bennett & Levi L. Carpenter formed a partnership in the early 1860's,
keeping a increased stock of goods, groceries, &c.
....D. Hayes started the first Otsego blackship shop, but was not the first in
Jeff.Twp.
...1856, Otsego was laid out/platted, and
became a trading location in the
virgin farming country (the first village area in Jeff.Twp, a precursor to
Oelwein when the rails came in1873).
...1857Jan22, The Jefferson Post Office was established, John B. Woods,

...1869Aug27, Dubuque.IA paper: Letter to the Editor from Otsego;
I have never seen anything in your paper in regard to our town of Otsego.
I will therefore write a few lines. Otsego is situated 14mi north of
Independence. Otsego has two stores and a large farming community
around. There is a survey three miles north of the Des Moines and McGregor
Railroad. Crops area very fair. There is not much grain stacked yet.
We are having a very wet time. It rains almost every day. The corn
crop very backward. Land is worth from $8 to $40 per acre (Note/bz:
Original entry land sold for $1.25/a in the 1855+ time frame, and immediately
was resold for $2.50/a, with increased following the next few years.)
...1870Mar11, West.Union.IA paper: A good letter
from Jefferson Township
.....Advantages, Settlement, &C; The south and west part of the township, (in
which is the head of the Greeley's Grove timber) is already well settled.
The remainder of the township is rapidly being settled. People are fast
being acquainted with the fact the form of the country is beautiful, just
rolling enough, and the quality of the soil is rich and fertile, and at lower
prices than an average of the State.
.....Improvements and Doings; A substantial flouring mill is being erected on
Otter Creek, in the south part of the township. Two or three surveys have
been amde through the township by the Des Moines and McGregor Rail Road Co., so
a large portion of the people expect a rail road just near enough to their
residences.
.....The only trading point and Post Office in
Jefferson.Twp at present (1870), is Otsego, a place of two stores, and three
places of entertainment for travelers. Those wishing to be lighted,
sweetened, spiced, salted, or even booted, should call on H.S. Day and Carpenter
& Bennett, of Otsego, where they will be attended to according to their needs,
and the amount of money they may have on hand.
...Religious denominations are well represented by regular preaching by
Methodists, Universalist, and two or three ssorts of Baptist preachers.

...1872Sept06, West.Union.IA paper: The hotel at Otsego has sold to
William Boland of Fayette, who with his family have removed to Otsego, intending

...1873, the rails came from the south, and Oelwein.IA was started
with a depot at this location 1+mi NW of Otsego. Within
a couple of years Otsego as a commercial pioneer village ceased to exist, with
nearly all commerce moving to the new rail center of Oelwein.
Otsego was
the precursor of Oelwein.
...1873+, B.H. Bennett moved his Otsego mercantile/grocery by wagon & four
horses today's SW corner of S.Frederick & 1st St. (Mealy Hotel corner).
This was the first store in what would become Oelwein (in Sec 21, Jeff.Twp,
originally named Hazelton, but quickly changed to the last name of an original
German settler of the location). The second was the cobbler store
built by Nick Graf, who made & repaired shoes and leather. Third, Bill
Watsel opened a clothing store. Independence businesses rapidly
built stores in the new town.
...1873Dec16, Dr. Patterson, a pioneer physician in the area, took it upon
himself to move the Otsego P.O. to the new Oelwein village.
...1873+, Otsego basically discontinued with the immediate growth of Oelwein.
Some of the Otsego building would be moved into Oelwein.
...1873-1876, Oelwein had grown to 40+ business firms, 9 churches, 5 social
clubs, a school building (1874/$950).
...1874Feb05, Oelwein.IA paper: Buildings Removed
from Otsego to Oelwein by early 1874: The drug store, post-office,
dwelling house of Dr. Pattison, store of B.H. Bennett (now enlarged), dwelling &
wagon shop of Darius Matteson, dwelling of Rev. L. Ellingwood moved from his
farm and built a blacksmith shop, blacksmith shop of M. Freeman, store &
dwelling of N.S. Pattison.
...1875+, the area around old Otsego would continue to be referenced as Otsego
Neighborhood into the later part of the 20th Century.
...1878, History of Fayette.Co.IA, p568: Otsego,
Jefferson.Twp. This little village was laid out in 1856, on the NW corner
of Sec34. A post office, named Jefferson, was established here, about the
same time, but it was soon re-christened with the cognomen borne by the town
(Otsego). Mr. (John B.) Woods opened a store here, and kept the post
office till his death in 1860. The first blacksmith was D. Hayes.
The second store was started in by B.H. Bennett, followed by another kept by
H.S. Day. Later on, Mr. Bennett formed a partnership with Levi L.
Carpenter, by which means the stock of goods was much increased---a great
convenience to the neighborhood, which was then far distant from any
considerable town. Mr. Bennett removed to Oelwein in 1873. The
advent of the railroad into Jefferson.Twp, passing to the west, within sight of
Otsego, and the location of the depot two miles away (Oelwein), has prevented
this hamlet from growing larger, at least for many years.
...1910, Fitches History of Fayette.Co.IA, p418-419: Otsego was one of the
promising villages of Fayette.Co.IA which died a natural death when missed by
the railroad in near-by territory. This village was laid out in 1856, on
the NW corner of Sec 34, Jefferson.Twp. It became quite a trading point,
and so continued until a railroad depot was established at Oelwein, in sight of
Otsego, but nearly 2 miles away. The business of the village was then
gradually absorbed by its more fortunate rival, some buildings were moved to
Oelwein, and finally, in 1873, Dr. Pattison, the pioneer physician of the
southern part of the county, removed the postoffice to Oelwein, and soon
Otsego was practically abandoned. The postoffice, at first named
Jefferson, but soon changed to Otsego, was established soon after the village
was laid out in 1856 (1857Jan22). Mr. Woods was the first merchant, and
also the first postmaster. He died about 1860. Bennett & Chapman
(should be Levi Carpenter) formed a mercantile partnership and conducted an
extensive business, having a large patronage from the farming community in which
no formidable rival town existed within a radius of many miles. Mr.
Bennett moved to Oelwein in 1873, where he was prominent in business circles.
Levi L.
Carpenter line
1860+, came from McHenry.Co.IL to settle in/near Otsego village, SE area of
Jefferson.Twp, Fay.Co.IA.
In1873, removed to Kansas, when Ostego village ceases to exist with the rails
coming to 'Oelwein.'
No recorded burials in Fayette.Co.IA; any deaths likely buried unmarked in
Otsego.Cem.
