From Stephen Linder:
I have a series of letters from the 1850ís between John Leonard and his family in Germany. I am have posted these letters into my Family Tree. I still have the original letters and the translations.  The Falk family came to Kane Co. Ill in 1854 then moved to sec 13, Banks.Twp,  Fayette Co. Iowa in 1858,  located between today's Sumner, Bremer.Co.IA and Randalia, Fayette.Co.IA.  The 1878 Fayette.Co.IA Hisotry states the Falk's own 200 acres of land valued at $25 per acre; born in Germany in 1821. Married Elizabeth Krug in 1856; she was born in Germany in 1832; have seven children and are members of the Lutheran Church. Buried in Sumner Union Cemetery, Iowa
Communication with Harry Kendall on 11-20-1980
In 1854 Johann Leonard Falk left Ansbach, Germany and emigrated to the United States. He arrived in Illinois and wrote a letter back home concerning his safe arrival. They in turn replied in the following letter, the first he received in this country. Many parts of this letter are illegible and in those areas only the approximate meaning can be gathered. The letter was translated by Dr. Ludik Kozlih, professor of languages, San Diego State University and his German wife, Brigitte.
Ansback, Germany, 18 June 1854
Dear brother-in-law and brother,
Thanks for your letter of 8 June 1854 and that you have arrived safely in America. Your sister and brother in Kloster Hielbronn (note: Heilbronn Cloister is apparently a village centering around the convent of that name.) send their greetings. We sent them your letter and we also noted they should send it back so we could also mail it to Kleinried (note: a little village). On 12 June 1854 your mother came to Ansbach and she gave us the special news that Mrs. Herz filed suit in District Court in Herrinden. The district Judge told her she had no case. Afterwards she went to a lawyer named
Nusser and filed a suit and ask that he should take care of it for her. He filed the suit against mother and they gave a certain time to go to Herrinden. The District Court Assessor told her that the expenses mother was to pay were in the amount of 160. (The letter talks about an inheritance that Johann is getting?) (and Mother told him) Maria lives off her son (Johann?) no more; he had received his inheritance a long time ago and spent it. This prompted the Court Assessor to ask how it was possible for him to go to America, for which he must have had money. But mother said "I know not at all where he is. He had a passport for travel into a foreign land. When he was supposed to go to America it must have been that his friends took him under their care". Upon which the Court Assessor wanted to cut it now to 1/2, but your mother was so clever and did not admit to anything at all. The lawyer repeated the saying "If you have nothing, the Emperor can get nothing" and the case came to an end.
The problem you had with your suitcase, namely, we learned from the owner of the tavern, Ensenberger. The tavern owner was in Trigsdorf. You should be glad that you have gotten rid of the burdensome woman, for she would in any case have followed you further. With this particular subject I send this letter.
Dear brother-in-law (apparently Johann's sister, Maria wrote the first portion of the letter and now this part if from husband.) Your mother gave me the task to tell you that you should not write to George at the Cloister (Kloster Heilbronn) to tell him to come to America. Your mother is worried that she won't be able to see him anymore and she thinks that after her death you can do as you please. I don't share the same opinion. I think that the most important thing is that one earns good money; the main thing is one's life. The longer you stay in America the better you will like it for everyone writes back in that manner.
Dear brother-in-law, if you write again please enclose a separate piece (letter) for George, where you can explain everything to him without mother's knowledge. Then George can do with it as he pleases. He's big enough now.
The plant nursery lady by the name Biscnoff.....she cried out loud because she hadn't heard from her brother in 5 years. Her helper would also like to go to America next spring. (The letter then seems to ask how much a tailor makes per week in America.) "My young one".....I don't think the money for the trip will be enough and he will have to remain in some other city until he saves enough money to enable him to go further.
Many hearty greeting from Franzbarr. Also many hearty greetings from you brother Peter, Heinrich and Falk in Willendorf, and many greetings from your mothers' brother Johann and sister-in-law Bergdolt and all other acquaintances in Kleinried.
......greetings from your sister Katharina and your brother-in-law.....best greetings from you sister and brother-in-law in Wisseth and from your brother and your sister and brother-in-law in Kloster Heilbronn. Recently we have read a letter from Aurora, namely Mayer von Hofstetten, his stepsons, both of them, one of whom is a tailor, the otheronkonom??? the latter of whom worked also at the railways namely the one earning....as you and both of them would not any longer want to return to Germany.......The son of the saloon owner Brinbaum, the son of the blacksmith Fisher and the son of Red.....saloon owner Konig..... ..... I cannot send you any special news...we have cold weather. Only today while I am writing this letter the day is warm. Very soon we can again witness another execution, Namely Setz..bold von Poppenreuth.....killed a woman near the convent. Is the story still known to you? ....the lord overshadows you richly with blessings until the last years of you life. We all greet you again many times over and also my parents and the little Fritz who is almost able to use a plow. Live well and be happy. This most sincere wish comes to you from you loving brother-in-law Fahr... So long, live happily and think of your sister who loves you and who is happy when your well-being is without accidents and worries. As last accept a kiss and everlasting friendship from my sister. I will think of you with delight and joy until I turn into dust and ashes. If ever you have a moment in your happy life give then a momentary thought to your sister Maria. So long
This letter is from Anna Elizabeth to my Eva Maria and mentions my Grandfather Gotlieb. Eva was married to George Bernhard Krug and living in Nebraska by then.
At one time Anna lived 3 miles west of Randalia, Fayette Co, Iowa.
A letter from Anna E. Falk apparently to her daughter, Eva Marie Falk dated 7-13-1892
Dear Children,
Yesterday we received your letter of the ninth and we see that you are healthy and well. As I imagine you celebrated the 4th of July, Fritz and Carl were in Olwein.
Why do you always write so little? I wrote you a letter on the 26th of June. Have you not received it? Is there much fruit over there? We have absolutely no plums and apples here. The maize is small. The roads are rather good again. They were poor. We have not made hay as yet be we will start on it soon. What is little Gotlieb doing? Have you gotten a windmill? Now you have a church. Dear Eva, I am still not well. I can barely walk, it's doubtful if it again will get well. I wish I could sell. Even though I don't quite know where to make my home, whether here or perhaps over there? Karl goes to Samna and may God will, greeting from us.
