Page Chronology:
2011Sept, Fussell
history started but not finished; 2017Jan, Fussell history restarted due
to working on Peter Graf Sr history, i.e. Fussell & Graf Hardware,
1870-1880+, on Main.St,
Fayette.IA; 2017Apr10, Although not fully ready to
stop on the Fussell surname, the page was initially uploaded before the project
was shelved again, as there is data on the surname that needs to be available
for others to build upon.
The Fussell's were some of the very first settlers in Fayette.Co.IA,
establishing farms just south of Lima/Albany in the Bear Grove and head of
Grannis Canyon area or abt 4mi east of Westfield/Fayette. Fussell brothers
took over a hardware store on Main.St,
Fayette.IA (3 doors N of the NW corner of Main/State, or across Main from the
1920-1970's drug store). Later Peter Graf Sr, purchased an interest in the hardware
business, followed by his son John Graf, then son Peter Graf Jr. Brothers
John and Peter Jr. Graf, would operate the business after their father's death.

Fayette.IA news; On Sunday night at 9pm, David Fussell, one of the earliest and
hardiest of pioneer Iowa settlers, departed this life at the age of 61ys, having
been long ill of chronic disease which defied the best medical aid of the
schools. Mr. Fussel first came to this county in
1849, entering a claim of 140a near Bear Grove. Continued farming
till in 1878 these had accumulated to 1000a in his possession in Fayette county.
In 1876, he engaged in the business firm of the hardware
store of Fussell Bros., and became a fixed citizen of Fayette, of which
he has been an important auxiliary for some years an
invalid. His funeral services were attended on Tues morning,
calling out all our old settlers. Rev Bronson made the opening prayer and
the pastor reviewed briefly the history of the deceased in his relationship to
the early settlement of the county, drawing a favorable status of Iowa in the
past time and present. He regretted he said that the feeble health of his
brother in the ministry, Rev. Fohergill, of the U.B. communion, of which Mr.
Fussell was an earlier member, prevented his presence and aid, as had been the
desire of the family. Two dau's, Mrs. Fortney and Mrs. Stansburry, were
the only absent ones of his children, these together with their chidlren, and
other relatives, making a concourse of morning seldom seen. So pass away
another of the men of our town, whose counsel and financial aid have added
largely to the building up.

utilized as a 'guide.')
1878 History of Fayette Co. Iowa - Fayette Township, p.707
...FUSSEL, David E. firm of Fussel Bros (David & Adam) dealers in hardware and agricultural
implements.
...Was born in Muskingum Co., Ohio, Oct. 30, 1822.
...Came to Iowa in
1844, worked in Jones and Linn Counties something over a year.
...Then went
back to Ohio.
...Was married, March 6, 1846, to Rachel Jennings. She was born
in Perry Co., Ohio, Feb. 29, 1828.
...The couple returned to Iowa in 1846; spent three
years in Jones, Linn and Buchanan Counties.
...In 1849, came to this
(Fayette) county; commenced here by purchasing a claim of 140 acres near Bear's
(Bear) Grove (Sec 13, Smithfield & Sec 18, Fairfield).
...Continued farming and accumulating land until he now owns near 1,000 acres
in this county.
...Rented his farms and engaged in business (hardware/farm machinery) here (Main.St,
Fayette.IA) in the Fall of
1876.
...Have ten children living - Cordelia (now Mrs. Fortney), Martin H.,
Dorcas (Mrs. Stansbury), Horton V., Pomeroy B., Ellis, Franklin H., Ophelia,
Aetna and Orion G. Mr. Fussel has been Township Trustee about five years.
...Belongs to the United Brethren Church.
David E. Fussell (Bios of Fayette.Co.IA, 1891)
...David E. Fussell, deceased, as an early settler, as a successful business
man, and as a worthy citizen, deserves a place among the representative men
of the county in this volume.
...He was born in Muskingum County, Ohio, October
30, 1822, and on his father's side was of German descent, his
grandfather
having come from the old country to America during Colonial days and
settled
in Pennsylvania, whence he removed to Muskingum County, Ohio.
...Our subject had very meager advantages for securing an education but he
made good use of such opportunities as he did have and supplemented them by
study at night even after a hard day's work. Having thus prepared himself
for teaching he engaged in that calling for several years.
...Among his pupils was a Miss Rachel Jennings, whose womanly ways attracted his
attention and ultimately won his affections. She was born in Perry County, Ohio,
February 29, 1828, and has therefore seen the recurrence of her birthday but
fifteen times.
...Rachel's parents, Isaac and Rhoda (Thorpe) Jennings, were of Irish and
English descent respectively. They were among the early settlers of Perry
County (Ohio) and both lived to a ripe old age, Isaac dying in Ohio and his wife
Rhonda nee Thorpe at
the home of Mrs. Fussell in this county (in Fayette village). They were faithful members of the
Regular Baptist Church and in their family were fourteen children, seven
sons and seven daughters, thirteen of whom lived to be grown, and of whom
Mrs. Fussell is third in order of birth.
...The year 1844 witnessed the arrival of Mr. Fussell in Fayette county, he
taking a claim four miles west of West Union, but after a short time he
returned to Ohio.
...In the spring of 1846 he again came West, but having been
away from his claim two years it was jumped, and he located in Linn County.
...Three years later (1849) he settled at Bear Grove (Sec 13, Smithfield/Sec18,
Fairfield). At that time there were only two houses in West Union and
the entire county was almost in its primitive condition, but just opening to
civilization. Starting on the Bear Grove virgin land as a poor man, he worked hard and underwent many of the trials and
difficulties incident to pioneer life. While clearing up a farm he would
carry his dinner, consisting chiefly of wild meat and corn dodgers, to the
woods, and the weather being cold he would often have to break the frozen
bread with his ax before it could be eaten.
...About 1851 he traded (most of his Bear Grove land) for a tract
of brush land on section 25, Westfield Township, and though it was four
miles from his home he walked back and forth each day while preparing a
(log)shelter for his family. However prosperity attended his efforts. The
boundaries of his farm were extended and the number of acres increased,
until at one time he owned over two entire sections, and his homestead farm
was one of the finest in the county.
...By good management and increasing toil
he became one of the wealthy men of this part of the county. He had also
other sources of income than that derived from landed property, being quite
an extensive money loaner, but he never charged more than 10 per cent.
interest.
...In connection with his brother Adam he purchased a hardware store
in Fayette, which they carried on for a number of years, in the meantime
building the storeroom now occupied by Graf & Son.
...In 1874 Mr. Fussell moved
to Fayette to enjoy a little well-earned rest, but he was spared only a few
years, dying March 4, 1883. Such were the hardships he had endured that he
was broken down physically by the time he was forty years of age, when he
should have been in the prime of manhood.
...Politically, Mr. Fussell was a Democrat until the (civil) war after which he
identified himself with the Republican party. He was not a man to seek
official recognition but served as Township Trustee and in other minor
offices. He was a member of the United Brethren Church (while near Lima,
M.E. Ch after moving into Fayette) as is his wife. He
was a man honorable in his dealings, liberal to worthy causes, charitable to
the needy and universally esteemed.
...His family consisted of twelve children:
Isabella; Cordelia married Samuel Fortner and died in Whitfield, Kan.;
Martin H., born January 15, 1852, wedded Mary L. Kingsberry and resides in
this county; Dorcas is the wife of Lewis Stansbury of this county; Horton V.
married Nellie Wait and is living in Charles City, Iowa; Pomeroy B. wedded
Jane Holsworth and lives in California; Elias married Stella Gregory and
resides in this county; Frank H. married Ida Bray and makes his home in this
county; Ophelia is the wife of Charles Wiley, of Charles City, Iowa; Amantha;
Etna V. married Henry Nobles; O. G. makes his home with his mother.
...When Mr. Fussell came to Iowa he had a wife and $40 but his wealth and
family increased to an unusual extent. His widow still resides in Fayette, a
splendid example of the hardy pioneer mothers.
David E. Fussel
(notes from 'Fayette County Iowa in the 1840's-1850's' by T.D. Peterman,
clarified with other data)
...David Fussel came to Iowa with his wife in 1846.
...The couple lived in Linn.Co.IA before coming to Fayette.Co.IA.
...They located at Bear Grove in the NE corner of Fairfield.Twp for a couple of
years.
...They traded that farm for on in Westfield.Twp, 4mi east of Westfield
(Fayette) village plat, and built a large log house, opening a fairly large
farm."
...In the late 1850's, he secured a quarter section of timber near his Westfield
farm, which he traded to Robert Alexander for Volga River bottom land.
...Water was not easy to get on the Westfield hill farm, so David made his last
move the Volga River bottom land two miles 'below' Lima.
...He built a large brick house, a good barn and opened one of the best farms in
the county at the time.
...He as a man of good judgment, full of energy and seldom undertook anything
without succeeding.

Do not trust as totally valid any tree/report data. Often World Connect or
Ancestry trees/data were utilized as a foundation upon which to add material
gleamed from obits, articles, histories, biographies, stories, burials, censuses
and other data collected. My primary interest is generally the pioneer
history and includes linking village and neighborhood surnames together for several of the early generations. Family connections, locations and other
data may have to be speculated in order to continue a complex series of
inter-related projects. My web pages are primarily personal study projects
for note keeping, but can also jump start others. I have a huge number of
projects started and rarely return to edit/update material unless interest is
rekindled. Any web pages online are usually linked off the 'Index Page.'
Numerous projects are not put on web pages but are in draft form or in the form
of photo albums on the 'Photo Hosting Site.' I may have material for
research use in storage, plus will/can upload other people's material if
appropriate.
