Gaynor Genealogy
Overview: Robert moved from Canada to the Waverly area, Bremer Co, Iowa, about 1856, to try farming for a shot time, an occupation he probably was not prepared for on the natural landscape of early Iowa. His brother-in-law James G. Haskett, married to Lucy Pyke Gaynor, settled on similar land just south of Westfield & Fayette villages, Iowa at the same time in 1856/1857. Both had a merchant's background and had been store keepers while in Canada. A time line for both Robert Gaynor and James Haskett is in the genealogy tree and report on this page, along with a map of the Fayette area showing locations and relative dates. By 1860, James Haskett had bought a town lot in Westfield, which was a sister pioneer 'village' 3/4 mile over the knoll in the same Volga River valley as Fayette. Both locations consisted of only a small number of merchants, craftsman, structures during the 1850's, as this was the frontier. It can be speculated James Haskett probably was involved in some type of mercantile endeavor while around the Westfield area. He would also own some timber land as shown on the map, and may have worked the timber as the Westfield Mill was only a stone throw away from his Westfield lot. In 1859/1860, Robert Gaynor removed from the Waverly area, likely/initially to join James Haskett at Westfield.. In 1862/1863 James would removed from the Westfield/Fayette area to Fredericksburg, Chickasaw County, Iowa, and run a mercantile business until 1880+/-. Past family friends/acquaintances had settled in nearby Chickasaw County. Robert Gaynor would live the rest of his life in Fayette, being an important early founding citizen and running a dry goods and grocery business on Main Street. His first wife would die in 1865, and he would remarry a Chickasaw County, merchant's widow, Harriet Tennant Waite in 1866. The Tennant and Waite families were merchant acquaintances of the Gaynor clan. Harriet Tennant would own and run a Millinery or women's clothing and dress ship, a long term business on the west side of Main Street, Fayette, just across the street from her husband Robert's Mercantile. Other siblings of Robert's were also in the Fayette and/or Iowa area, with basic information in the tree and report. Robert would retire from his mercantile business by 1880, perhaps from a heart condition, as he would die in 1882 from a heart attack. Harriet would continue her millinery shop until 1900+, and would die in 1907. Robert, and both wives, Abigail Van Lone and Harriett Tennant are buried at Grandview Cemetery in Fayette, Iowa. The Gaynor's were an important Fayette Co, Iowa, clan with a strong connection from 1856/1857 to 'corporate' America and the vanishing of family farms/businesses. Besides Robert and Harriet there were other Gaynor, or related by marriage, merchants on Main Street Fayette and farming just south of Fayette in Smithfield Twp or near Fayette.

Fayette Iowa Pictograph 1871. The Seminar (College Hall) for Upper Iowa University been completely finished by the late 1850's. Along with Volga River fords at the ends of the major streets, in 1865 the first bridge at the north end of Main Street was in operation. By the mid/late 1860's nearly all merchants and craftsman were located on or near Main Street. The sister pioneer village to Fayette, 'Westfield' located at the upper, right corner, had been absorbed into Fayette, with the increased influence of the college and grouping of merchants and people around Main Street. A water grist mill and major woolen mill, and some other craftsman/manufacturing would continue around Westfield into early 1900's. A railroad spur out of Marion, Iowa, would bring the first train into Fayette in 1873, with the rock cuts and bridges finished in 1875, allowing the Fayette train to continue on into Calmar. Fr m 1850-1873, all imported goods came by oxen and horse teams from the Mississippi River ports or from rail heads such as Manchester and Cedar Rapids to the south. Robert Gaynor's Dry Goods and Groceries and Harriet Gaynor's Millinery and Dress Shop would sell products supplies by draft animals, then rails, plus those products and commodities produced by local farmers and craftman.

BLOCK 6, LOT 10, TRANSACTIONS, FAYETTE, IOWA
(This is the east side of the northern full business block. Lots 8-14 face Main
St, with lot 8 on the south, lot 14 on the north end, thus lot 10 in near the
south/middle. Lot 10 would be the location of the Robert Gaynor Merchantile/Grocery).
(Note: there are gaps in the buy/sell listings where no recording has been made
and an 'owner' / 'seller' just 'happens.')
1856 Samuel H. Robertson had entered most Fayette area land and lot 10.
1856 James L. Marshall bought lot 10, then the ownership chronology.

INFORMATION AND SPECULATIONS/bz/Mar 2007: Since Robert's brother-in-law James G.
Haskett (husb of Robert's sister Lucy) came to Fay. Co. in 1857, and 1860 bought
lot 7, bk 4, in Westfield (over the knoll, 3/4mi west of Main St. Fayette),
there is a fair possibility that Robert was living with the Haskett's and they
were running some type of merchantile, and/or working some timber on land James
Haskett owned just north of Fayette. Robert Gaynor did not buy property on Main
St, Fayette, until about the time James Haskett moved from Fayette. The Gaynor
Grocery and Dry Goods Store would be on the east side of the northern full
business block of Main Street, Fayette. The building was a two story frame
building on the north side of lot 10, in the lot just north of the 'Cleveland
Block' of buildings (a series of three adjoined two story brick stores which
burned in 1943 and were reduced to one story structures which still stand in the
early 2000's), which were north of the old Fayette House Hotel, which was torn
down in the late 1960'. The Grocery would have been just south of the middle of
this block. Later, on the south half of lot 10, there would be a two story brick
building, which would become a grocery/meat market, and later Carley's Plumbing
of the 1950+. Robert's second wife Hattie would run a Millinary or Women's
Clothng and Dress Shop, across Main Street on the west side and a bit north of
Robert's store, on the northern portion of lot 4 or block 13. Harriett's
Millinary was also a two story brick buillding, and would have been just south of
the long remembered Knight's Hardware Store. Robert's store was torn down, while
Harriett's still stands.
LAND TRANSACTIONS, N 30' of LOT 4, BK 13, FAYETTE, IA

INFORMATION AND SPECULATIONS/bz/Mar 2007: Since Robert's brother-in-law James G.
Haskett (husb of Robert's sister Lucy) came to Fay. Co. in 1857, and 1860 bought
lot 7, bk 4, in Westfield (over the knoll, 3/4mi west of Main St. Fayette),
there is a fair possibility that Robert was living with the Haskett's and they
were running some type of mercantile, and/or working some timber on land James
Robert's second wife Hattie would run a Millinery or Women's
Clothing and Dress Shop, across Main Street on the west side and a bit north of
Robert's store, on the northern portion of lot 4 or block 13. Harriett's
Millinery was also a two story brick buillding, and would have been just south of
the long remembered Knight's Hardware Store. Robert's store was torn down, while
Harriett's still stands.
LAND TRANSACTIONS, N 30' of LOT 4, BK 13, FAYETTE, IA
(Middle of the west side of the north business block of Main St. Robert Gaynor's
second wife Harriet an women's dress/millinery shop. This is across the street
and just a bit north of her husband Robert's merchantile store.).
May 1867 Harriet E. Gaynor bought from Albert Strong, N 30ft of lot 4, block 13.
Apr 1904 Harriet E. Gaynor sold to H.V. Fussell, N30ft, lot 4, bk 13.
