Newspaper Notes

Newspaper Notes:

1875Nov3BrushCreek, John R. Orvis has sold his stock of good to M. McCrea (Mathew),  McCrea will occupy the new store in the Pacific Block (of joined buildings on Main.St).

1879Aug22BrushCreek, John Carnall and family returned Wed after a few months in Webster and Boone counties.  John has come back to stay, finally convinced that this is a good country to live in.

1879Sep12BrushCreek, James Carnall and A. Ainswroth have purchased a cider mill and are making dicer from Siberian apples.  This is the first cider mill ever in this vincinity.

1880Jan23BrushCreek.  It seems that our Scott Twp. correspondent was mistaken about Mr. James Scott going to Nebraska.  Mr. Scott has bought the Bishop farm, one mile SW of this place (Brush.Creek/Arlington), will soon take possession.

1880Apr16BrushCreek, Ad: McEwen (Neil) & Stetter (Cornelius), New Store, the "Boom" is Here Now!  We are now ready for the Spring trade with a large stock of new goods.  Dry goods, groceries, hats, caps.  Boots and shoes a specialty.  An inspection of our goods and prices will satisfy all that the place to buy goods is at the Clear Cash Store.  Have just received our stock of fancy, patent and re-bolted flour from Quaker Mills of Manchester, Iowa.

1880May07BrushCreek, Robert McCrea started for LaCrosse.WI on Monday, where he will spend the summer.

1880Jun04BrushCreek, The Fairfield Cemetery Association is not a failure, but then it lags.  There seems to be nothing that men are so slow to do as to prepare for death when living and in good health.  It is a fact that the people of Brush Creek and vicinity must have some place to bury their dead or let them go unburied.  The old grave-yard on the hill is about full (Brush Creek Cem or later Groat) with the exception of that part of the ground that is so wet that no on wants to bury in it.  A partial contract had been made with the Oakley Brothers for a very handsome cemetery ground, but a failure to get the amount of money subscribed to pay for it delayed the project.  When the heads of families are so unfortunate as to have dead to bury they will wonder why the people have been so slow to make the necessary arrangements for the internment of the dead.  There is no one thing that bespeaks fine culture more than a tasty and well arranged burying ground.

1880Jun04BrushCreek, McEwen & Stetter are laying out a neat croquet ground near their store.

1881Mar18BrushCreek, Ad:  McEwen & Stetter, one door south of the Pacific House (hotel).  Great Reduction in prices of caps, clothing, gloves and mittens, furs, flannels, yarns, skirts, ladies' and gents' underwear, and cloaks, at cost.  We keep Jones (Manchester) flannel.

1881Jun23BrushCreek, Ad:  Carnall Bros., John and James Jr. Carnall, Dealers in all kinds of Hardware.  Have a complete stock of shelf and heavy hardware, tnware, woodenware, and, in fact, most everthing usually kept in a hardware store.  Out stock is entirely new, and will be wold at prices that defy competition.  Call and see us, Union Block (of buildings) Brush Creek.IA.  Go to Carnall Bros. for pumps, cook stoves, Kelly Steel Barb Wire,

1882Aug11BrushCreek, James McEwen patron of Sheffield (Franklin.Co.IA) has paid for 'The News.'   J. F. McEwen of Manchester was with his many friends in Brush Creek a couple of days this week.

1882Nov11BrushCreek, Caleb Adams and Tinna McEwen departed for Cherokee, Monday evening, having been called by a telegram to attend the funeral of little Gilbert, only son of T.H. Adams, who died Sunday.  James McEwen is living in Sheffield.IA.  J.F. McEwen of Manchester, was with his many friends at Brush Creek a couple of days this week.

1882Dec22BrushCreek, Myron St. John, who has been practicing dentistry with a noted dentist at Janesville.WI, has returned and concluded to locate at this place.  He will occupy the front rooms over Carnall's Harware Store.

1883FebArlington, It is supposed that James Scott, the stage driver who perished in the severe snow storm in Wyoming Territory, was a son of James Scott of Arlington.  (later stated apparently not son of James Sr.)

1883Apr27Brush Creek, Neil McEwen, living in Brush Creek (area).  A. McEwen living in Westerville, Custer.Co.NE.  Gilbert McEwen living in Taho City, CO.

1883May04BrushCreek, After investigation, Mr. James Scott is finally satisfied that the stage driver Scott, who was frozen to death in Wyoming Territory was not his son.  Neil McEwen give notice that he will do no more blacksmithing at his shop on Prospect Farm.  Of course he will continue to raise the finest Poland-China hogs to be seen in this counrty.

1883May18BrushCreek(Arlington), Neil McEwen will take a look at Nebraska, next week.  We opins that he will return satisfied that there is no place like Prospect Farm (name of his farm).

1883Aug03BrushCreek, James Carnall Jr., started for Harper.Co.KS, yesterday (a number of area 2nd generation moved to Harper.Co.KS, to include several Thompson's).

1882Sep14BrushCreek, John Carnall is in Dubuque, looking up a stock of goods (for his hardware store).

1883Oct19BrushCreek, James Carnal Jr., Frank Carnall and Samuel Thompson left for Kansas last week.

1883Nov23BrushCreek, Neil McEwen has his blacksmith shop completed and it is a commodious, fine looking structure.  Will A. Thompson is his assistant and they are already driving business like an old established shop.

1888Feb23BrushCreek, John Carnall expects to go bag and baggage to Winnebago.Co.IA in about ten days.  His wife and children left last evening for Rolf.IA, where they will visit her parents for a couple of weeks when they will join John at their new home.

1891Feb10BrushCreek, James Scott has moved to his Taylorville home.

1891Apr09BrushCreek, Neil McEwen came down from Brit (Hancock.Co.IA) last Friday and has been busy this week making improvements to his High St. property.

1891May28BrushCreek, Mrs. James McCrea died at her home near Volga City last week on Wed.

1891Jun18BruchCreek, John Carnal and family are now located in Sioux City where he is engaged in N. R. Hathaway in a commission (auction) house.

1891Aug19BrushCreek, Thomas McCrea has sold his farm of 140a to eastern parties.

1891Sep17Maynard, McEwen & Hyde made a large exhibit of their blacksmith work at the Brush Creek Fair and took first premium.  They had a very fine assortment and all the work was first class.

1891Oct01BrushCreek, James Carnall and wife went to St. Louis last week to spend a few days with relatives.

1891Nov05Maynard, The Sunday school concert at the M.E. church Sabbath evening was very much enjoyed by those present.  In addition to the singing by the school several solos were sung.  Recitations were given by Miss Jennie McEwen, Caroline Jacobson and George Bing.

1891Nov26Maynard, J. Dewey & Neil McEwen have been in Hancock county for the past week.

James Carnall
Page 382 - 1891 Portrait & Biographical Album of Fayette Co. Iowa
..."James Carnall, who resides on section 30, Fairfield Township, is a retired farmer and well known citizen of Fayette County. He was born December 23, 1824, in Lincolnshire, England at Swernshead, and is one of six children born unto John and Ann (Sumpter) Carnall. The former was born in the same parish as our subject, and grew up on his father's farm. The grandfather was a wealthy man, being worth about $75,000 and according to the English law of primogeniture his estate fell to his eldest son, while John, the younger son received only a small farm of forty acres, upon which he lived and died. There were also three daughters in the family. John Carnall died about 1864, at the age of seventy-two, and his wife, who survived him ten years, was eighty-three years of age at her death. Only two of their children are now living, and but two came to America. The eldest daughter now lives in Yorkshire, England, at the town of Whitby.
...Our subject was the thirteenth child, and in the usual manner of farmer lads the days of his boyhood and youth were spent. At the age of twenty he left home and went to Liverpool, where he drove a cab for two years, being in the employ of his brothers who kept a stable in that city. In 1846 he went to London and entered the employ of a railroad company as porter. His residence in the world's metropolis covered the years between 1846 and January, 1849, and during that period he was married to Caroline Nicholson, the wedding ceremony being performed in St. Andrew Church on South Conduit Street, on the 15th of July, 1849. Mrs. Carnall was born in the suburbs of London at Chapel Hill. During her childhood she lost her mother, and her father coming to America, she was left with relatives who reared her.
...On the 2d of February, 1851, Mr. and Mrs. Carnall boarded an ocean vessel at Liverpool, and at length landed at New York City, whence they proceeded to St. Thomas, Upper Canada, where he bought one hundred acres of land in good farming country. Five children were born unto them while residing there, and the family circle was increased by the birth of three children after their removal to this county in 1861. Mr. Carnall purchased his present homestead, consisting of one hundred and sixty acres of farm land and twenty of timber for $1,100. At that time the land was partly improved but it has been brought to its present state of perfection through the untiring industry and energy of the owner. A comfortable residence is surrounded by fine shade and ornamental trees of his own planting, and in this farm we see one of the best homes in the county. Mr. Carnall is now living a retired life, his youngest son operating the farm. He came to this country a poor man, but by economy, industry and good business management, and the assistance of his worthy wife, he has gained a comfortable competence which enables him to lay aside all care and spend his remaining years in the enjoyment of the fruits of former toil. Besides his farm property he built and is the owner of a fine brick store in Brush Creek.
...The
children of Mr. and Mrs. Carnall are Drusilla, wife of J. A. Thompson, a leading merchant of Brush Creek; John, who married Flora Hartman, and is now a farmer in Winnebago County, Iowa; Salome, wife of Neal McEwen, of Bright, Hancock County; James, who married Agnes Manson, of Brush Creek, and is now engaged in farming in Hopper County, Kan.; Frank, who resides in Kingman County, Kan., and there married Alice Hawley; Caroline, who was born in the schoolhouse near the homestead, where the family resided six weeks on their arrival in this county, is now the wife of Alfred Amos, of Custer County, Neb.; Thomas N. married Alice Duffy, of Waucoma, and is now agent for the railroad at Newhall, Benton County, Iowa; and Charles who manages the home farm. He married Mattie Derflinger, of Scott Township. Two other children died in infancy. Those who grew to mature years were liberally educated, having attended the public schools, and the Upper Iowa University of Fayette. Mr. Carnall is a well-informed man, who by reading and observation keeps himself posted on all the questions of the day. He has served on the Board of Trustees of the township for three years, and is a Republican in politics, but when he knows the candidates personally, uses his judgment in voting for the parties. While in England he was a member of the Ancient Order of Foresters, but is now connected with no civic society. His wife and five children are members of the Christian Church of Brush Creek, which he also attends, giving liberally to its support. No family in Fayette County is held in higher esteem than that of Mr. Carnall, who is regarded by his fellow townsmen as a man of sterling worth."

Almon Rawson
Page 294 - 1891 Portrait & Biographical Album of Fayette County Iowa
...Almon Rawson, proprietor of the Brush Creek Bank, has been an active business man of Fayette County for nearly thirty years. He was born in Madison, Lake County, Ohio, June 12, 1842, and his paternal ancestors were among the sturdy Englishmen who first came to America to make a home. The founder of the family in the new world, Edward Rawson, was born in Gillingham, Dorsetshire, England, April 16, 1615. Having married Miss Rachel Perne, he emigrated to this country in 1636 and settled in the town of Newbury, in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was a man of superior ability and great force of character and as a result took a prominent part in the affairs of the colony. In 1647 and 1648, he represented Newbury in the General Council and was the recipient of a grant of five hundred acres of land from the Government, for services rendered the commonwealth. He was appointed Secretary of the Colony of Massachusetts Bay, and annually chosen thereto for thirty-five years until the government was turned over to Sir Edmund Andres. Acting in that capacity he signed the warrants issued and sent by Charles II of England to America for the arrest of regicides. He was the author of several books and in religious faith was a Presbyterian of the strictest sect. His death occurred August 27, 1693, as shown by the record in the family Bible, which though more than two hundred years old, is still in possession of his descendants. His posterity have greatly increased in numbers, as may be surmised from the fact that his son William was the father of twenty children. Able lawyers, skillful physicians, prominent legislators and renowned military men are numbered among the descendants of that sturdy English pioneer. Harvard College has graduated a goodly number of them and in the struggle for independence and the War of 1812, they fought for American liberty.
...The grandfather of our subject, Grindell Rawson, emigrated from Oneida County, N. Y., to Lake County, Ohio, in 1816, settled in the woods and developed a farm on which he lived till his death in 1872. His son, Joseph T., the father of Almon Rawson, was born in Oneida County, in 1814, and was therefore but two years old when they emigrated to Ohio. In Lake County he was joined in wedlock with Mary D. Genung, a native of Yates County, N. Y., born in 1817. In 1861, they became residents of this county, locating in Taylorville, where Mr. Rawson passed away in 1874. His wife lives with her only son, the subject of this sketch. Politically, he was a Whig and Republican, but never sought the honors or emoluments of public office. Religiously he was of the Baptist faith, as is also his wife. Of their four children but two survive: Almon and Mrs. Emma D. Rice of Chicago. The former is the eldest of the family. He was nineteen years of age at the time his parents came to this county, and with his father he worked on the farm until his death, at which time they owned four hundred and sixty acres of land.
...On the 5th of June, 1871, Mr. Rawson led to the marriage altar Miss Maggie L. McEwen, a native of Canada, born July 18, 1846. Her parents emigrated from Scotland to that country where her mother died, but her father spent his last days in this county. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Rawson have been born five children: Joseph T., who died at the age of thirteen months; Ralph N., Emma J., Clark A. and Adrian L. Mr. Rawson and his wife are leading members in the Methodist Episcopal Church of Brush Creek, with which she has been connected since its organization. He takes a laudable interest in the improvement of educational institutions and for thirteen years he served as Treasurer of the School Board, a position which he still fills. In politics he is a Republican, having supported that party since 1864, when he cast his first vote for President Lincoln. He is also a charter member of the Knights of Pythias lodge of Brush Creek. The office of Mayer he acceptably filled and the county numbers him among its most valued citizens.
...Having farmed until 1876, Mr. Rawson removed to Brush Creek and with his brother-in-law, G. E. Rice, started the Brush Creek Bank, which they carried on together for ten years, when he purchased his partner's interest is now sole proprietor. He also has a large horse ranch on which he keeps thoroughbred Clydesdales and other high grades of horses, having about sixty in all. He has made several importations. In former years, in company with Mr. Rice, he dealt extensively in cattle, one deal with Hiram Sweet amounting to $14,300, and another in Montana to $18,500. He was one of the organizers of the bank at West Union and was a member of its first board of directors, and in the Brush Creek Creamery Company with which he is connected he holds the position of treasurer. It will thus be seen that while Mr. Rawson has extensive business interests of his own, he is liberal in assisting in any worthy cause, both with time and means. He is accounted one of the affluent men of this part of the county and with the exception of about $1,000 which he inherited, his possessions are the just reward for his energy and business tact."
