Neuenschwander Surname Origin

...A 'Schwand' in the German-Swiss dialect is a forest area which through the felling of trees and rooting out of the stumps, had been cleared into fields and pasture lands.
...Around the years 1200 to 1300, numerous area had been cleared. Later a newly cleared area received the name of "Neuen-Schwand" or new clearing.
...People who lived in Neuen-Schwand were called Neuenschwander. The surname is a mark of origin and is connected in every case with the village of "Neuenschwand" near "Eggiwil."

Eggiwil village area.

Neuenschwand's above in Switzerland, are pastured clearings
and appear similar to cleared areas of early Northeastern Iowa, below.
The forest soil in Iowa developed under deciduous hardwoods and not conifer/pine forest,
plus there was more complete denuding and erosion of hills in Iowa, as below.

...Neuenschwander, is a  family name, meaning a man from the area of a tiny village (or Doerflien) of Neuenschwand, which is near the village of Langnau, in the administrative district of upper Emmental between the cities of Bern & Lucerne, in the canton of Bern, in Switzerland.
...Neuenschwand village was/is on a ridge overlooking the Emme River in Emmental district (Emme River Valley flowage).
...Langnau was first noted in history about 850 A.D.  Langnau's population in 1700 was abt. 3000, in 1850 abt. 5400.  In modern time Langnau has a population of about 9000 and still the most important market in the region.
...The area is rolling hills at an elevation about 2400ft and usually very sunny with the average  temperature variations from about 74F to 23F.  Precipitation averages 54"/yr.  Although a very sunny area, precipitation occurs on an  average of 145 days/yr.
...The area was known for dairy herds and cheese making as well as a center of pottery, linen and canvas production.  German is the predominate language spoken.

Note:  As of 2010, still searching for a connection of the Neuenschwander line of Fayette Co, Iowa, to the other Switzerland lines and the parents of Ulrich, father of Elgin.IA's John Neuenschwander.

...The first person of this family was known to have been an Anabaptist (Mennonite) (use Google and Wikipedia to understand the meaning)  was Uli Neuenschwander from Eggiwil, who appeared at the Bern disputation March 11-18, 1538.
...In 1551 Mathis Neuenschwander fled from his Emmental (district) home because of his Anabaptist faith.
...Peter Neuenschwander and family left their home in Langnau in 1729 and settled at Cortébert in the Jura. A son Michael lived on the Münsterberg. The latter's son Michael moved to the Normanvillars settlement in France and in 1823 migrated to Wayne.Co.OH becoming one of the first settlers in the Chippewa settlement. In 1833 the family moved to Putnam.Co.OH, to become the first Mennonite settlers there.
...A son, John B. Neuenschwander, founded the Mennonite settlement near Des Moines, Polk.Co.IA, by settling there in 1849. This family moved to Moniteau.Co.MO, in 1868, becoming one of the pioneer families in that settlement.
...Peter M. Neuenschwander was a bishop at Berne.IN.  The Dutch Naamlijst of 1802 lists Ulrich Neuenschwander as an elder of the congregation at Boliou (?) in the county of Limousin, France.  He was ordained in 1782.
...Another family that some claim were originally Neuenschwander's are the Newschwanger's who first appeared in Lancaster Co., Pa., in the 18th century. Of this family Emmanual Newschwanger (1758-1846) ministered to the Diller congregation (Mennonite Church) near Newville, Pa. for many years. In Virginia, Abraham Nisewander (1774-1846) served in the Rockingham County Mennonite ministry for a number of years. In later generations the name became common in the Church of the Brethren. Other families of this name have been located in Ontario, Kansas and Oregon.
...A Neuschwander family immigrated to Oregon from Switzerland in the 1880s, eventually settling near Silverton, OR.

Modern day Lanagnau, Switzerland.

More notes (2010) from GenForum:  The Neuenschwandger (Neuenschwander) line...
...A very old family association  of the region of Signau of the Nilder-stocken (The German-speaking area of Switzerland) Hofen, Lietzelkirk, Canton Bern, Switzerland.  It should be noted the small size of these locations in miles/area and the fact the populations were often relatively isolated for generations.
...In the 1970's there were still several John Neuenschwandger families living in Switzerland.
...Many families of this name were listed in the parish record in the Gemendehaus at Lagnau, a town located on the watershed of the Emme (in French) river (Emmenthal is the German) in the region of the Canton Bern, Switzerland. There were records of this family going back to the 12th century.
...In the early 1700's some of these families, including John Neuenschwandger, moved to Sonbog in the parish of Sorenton on the Jura Plato of the French-speaking region of the Canton Bern, Switzerland. According to the old law, they still retained their citizenship in the parish where their forefathers lived at the time of the enactment of the law.
...The Neuenschwandger's had become of the Anabaptists, a persecuted religious sect, which denied the validity of infant baptism although they did practice baptism of the adults.
...Records in archives at Canton Bern, Switzerland, indicate a band/group of settlers, as early as the 1100's A.D., made a clearing or 'schwand' in the valley forests for raising food. The new clearing was a new schwand (neuenschwand) and these people took the name of NEUENSCHWANDER, in the Swiss dialect, or NEUENSCHWANDGER in the German. Schwand is the imperfect form of the verb Schwanden, which means to cease, to disappear to clear. The 'er' denotes a person.
...In Swiss history in 1357, a man with the name Henneus of the Neuschwand officiated at the establishing of the rights of the church at that time, which was before the Reformation of the Catholic Church.
...During this time period, village people usually were known by only one name, thus Henneus. He was a man with a certain amount of power/control and was able to assume a second name, that birthplace, Neuenschwandger/Neuenschander.
...In 1654 there was an exodus of these people to the Jura Mountains on the border of France owing to the persecution of the state church, which was Calvinist. The French language was spoken for a period of about twenty years, which in turn caused the “d” in the name to become the softer “g” and “neuen” to become “new”, in that area.
...When the Neuenschwander (Swiss dialect)/Neuenschwandger(German dialect) families migrated through Germany or France to the American colonies and spread throughout the United States, the name became spelled in numerous ways, usually resulting from poor handwriting or attempts to spell it as it was heard spoken; Neiswander, Neuschwanger, Neuen, Newenswander, Newswanger, Neyswander, Niswander,  Nisewander, Nicewander, Nighswander, Niswonger, Niswanger, Nicewandger, Niswanter, Knighswander  Nyswaner, Nyswonger,
...Abraham, one of the brothers of Christian Neuenschwandger had a chest of family records going back prior to the 1200s, but it was lost some time during the move to America.
...The largest castle of the family was built in 1357 on the Neuenschwand.
...During the 1500-1700s, religious wars were ongoing, caused by hatred between the established churches of Hugue (later Huguenots),  German Lutherans,  Swiss Reformed churches, and the Roman Catholics.  Younger members of the prominent families of the trouble times often would leave for religious freedom in America in the later years. Many families had already moved out of Switzerland into southwest Germany, Alsace Lorrain, or into France. Early German missionaries had found undisturbed religious freedom in Pennsylvania, western Maryland, and Virginia by the late 1600's.
...Starting in 1671, there was an exodus of Swiss area Mennonites to Germany and to the American colonies. This religious sect was named after Menno Simon, and was in opposition to taking oaths, infant baptism (from which came the name Anabaptists) and military service.  The rules for plain dress and living were adopted. That part of the Reformation that lead to the Mennonite movement began in Switzerland in 1525. Menno Simon, a Roman Catholic priest, joined the group in 1636.  While in Europe, the Amish became an offshoot of the Mennonite sect, taking the name for the founder, Jacob, and were firm, even today, in holding fast to church rules of plain dress and living habits.
...As these Mennonite families dispersed over the American colonies and later the United States, many of them quickly gave up the rigid rules of the Mennonites and took on the social life, education, churches and militia/military of the area in which they lived. This was particularly true of the Neuenschwander/Neuenschwandger families.

The Mennonites of Ohio; where John Neuenschwander removed from to NE Iowa, about 1859.

...The Mennonites as a religious group originated in the Netherlands and Switzerland during the early 1500s. Mennonites originally came together in opposition to certain actions and policies of the Roman Catholic Church.
...The Mennonite name was derived from the founder of the Mennonite Church in the Netherlands, Menno Simons.
...Some Mennonites were/are more conservative in their religious views than others, but the majority shared  common beliefs.
...Mennonites generally aspire to create a religious community dedicated to God's word as presented in the New Testament. They rejected infant baptism, believing that adults must profess their faith in God to be formally baptized. They do practice communion, and some members also engage in foot washing. Most Mennonites are pacifists and are opposed to violence and war. Some also refuse to take oaths. They believe that the only oath that they should take is to dedicate their lives to God.
...Some Mennonite groups use a variety of modern conveniences such as electricity and automobiles. Other more conservative groups prefer to remain withdrawn from most modern conveniences. Conservative Mennonites also prefer simplistic dress that does not reveal bodily features.
...During the 1700s and the 1800s, many Mennonites fled religious turmoil in Europe and sought religious freedom in the New World. Most of these people settled in Pennsylvania, but succeeding generations have moved across the Midwest. ...The Mennonites first arrived in Ohio during the early 1800s. coming through Pennsyvlania. They originally settled in today's Stark, Wayne, Holmes, and Knox Counties. Mennonites also moved into Ashland, Geauga, and Putnam Counties as well as many other places across Ohio. ...Most Mennonites earned their living through agriculture. In the 2000s there were more than 450,000 Mennonites in North America.

Dale Rausch of West Union and Mary Rohlman of Naperville, Ill.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Jeanette Neuenswander
