Page Chronology:  2019Feb28:  Page initially uploaded.  A huge number of hours was spent building a tree attempting to connect the pioneer Reeves families of Fayette.Co.IA, and as a result of working on Staples surname history.

...Web page objectives:   share data, jump start others, make contacts, use a simple web page format.
...Do not trust as totally valid any tree/report data...it will be my best guess at the time of working on a specific project.  Often World Connect or Ancestry trees/data were utilized as a foundation upon which to add material gleamed from obits, articles, histories, biographies, stories, burials, censuses and other data collected.

In the Beginning (1850+/-)

...1840..Fayette.Co.IA was 3/5 undulating wet/tall grass prairie on the west side of a diagonal running SE to NW.
.....The prairie grasses were up to 10+ feet tall with deep root systems; about 70% was wet-grass, spongy slough habitat.
.....Wooded areas in rolling prairie county were along major stream watersheds and found in grooves.
...The east 2/5 of the diagonal was rolling and hilly timber land with limited river valley bottom land; the un-glaciated area.
...The Mission Trail, the trail from Dubuque.IA, supplying the Mission and Ft.Atkinkson in Winneshiek.Co.IA, followed along the prairie-hill diagonal.
.....The area north of the Mission Trail was the Neutral Ground, off limits to white settlement until about mid-1848.
.....There were a few settlers living in cabins south and along the Mission trail subsiding on garden size plots and hunting/trapping.
.....Men were probing/exploring into the Neutral Ground, waiting for it to open for settlement.
...1848..The Indians were 'pushed out' of the Neutral Ground and it opened for 'the white tide.'  There was a 'rush' into the county.

...1848..Several families came to settle in the today's Elgin on the Otter.Creek & the Turkey River, Pleasant.Valley.Twp, to include
Stephen Reeves(1819/OH-1896/CO), John Phillips(1807/OH-1888/Union.Twp) & Mary nee Reeves Phillips(1812/OH-1897/Union.Twp, sister of Stephen), Samuel & Joseph Conners.

...1849..E.A. & H.W. Light, T.R. Talbot & a Mr. Lucklow came to what would be Lima on the Volga River in Westfield.Twp, 10mi south of Elgin.
......
Benjamin Reeves(1817/OH-bef1900/WIorMN) likely had the first stock of goods in Lima, late 1850/early 1851.

...1850..Census: Fayette.Co.IA, 154 families & about 950 individuals were enumerated; the 'First Families of Fayette.Co.IA.'
..... To include the Stephen Reeves family living with the Simeon Forbes family and John & Mary nee Reeves Phillips family at Elgin.

...1848Aug (from West.Union.IA paper 1876July14):  History of Pleasant Valley Twp):  Before 1848, little is known.  Someone had built a dam across Otter.Creek in the Elgin area, but being on reserve or neutral ground, the Indians ordered them away and tore the dam down.  Samuel Conner and Simeon B. Forbes, were first permanent settlers, and built the first house, 1848Aug, on Sec 23, about 3/4mi south of present day Elgin, plus broke some land.    Benjamin Diamond arrived, and started the first saw mill 1849May12, with Samuel Conner, at the mouth of Otter.Creek, and furnished timber/lumber for the new Earl Mill at Auburn the same year. Diamond & Conner started building the first grist mill 1852Apr, with the first corn ground 1853Dec, and the mill completed 1854Feb.
......Elgin was laid out by Mr. Burdick, 1851Fall/Winter, with Samuel Conner the proprietor and building the first house.  George Gay opened the first store 1851Winter.  The Elgin P.O. was established 1852, with Benjamin Diamond the postmaster.  The first chruch built in 1854.

NOTE:  The families of John and Mary Reeves Phillips and Stephen Reeves (brother of Mary Reeves Phillips), likely came at the same time as Simeon Forbes & Samuel Conner, initially locating on Sec 23, also.  In the 1850 Census, John & Mary Philips are located in the Elgin area, and the Stephen Reeves family is living with Simeon Forbes.

...1849Apr, William Wells had built a log cabin/house on north side of Otter.Creek just south of Knob Prairie (to-be West.Union).  Simeon B. Forbes and bro. Joseph Forbes, with John Phillips, Stephen Reeves, Samuel Conner, Mr. Diamond and several others were in the Elgin area.

...1889Aug01, Elkader.IA paper:  Clayton County Poor Farm; Mr. John Reeves, 78yrs, an old resident of McGregor, was for some time an inmate of the Clayton.Co. Poor House.  He is not pleased with the management of the poor house, according to an interview published in last week's News, charging the county steward Robert Quinn, raised in Cox.Creek.Twp, son of one of the most respectable residents) with irregularities.  The charitable idea is that Mr. Reeves, who is an old man, is difficult to please and perhaps childish.  This conclusion would seem correct when it is considered he has some 8 children living who have homes, while he is a subject of charity at the county's expense.  Steward Quinn flatly denies Reeves' charges, that he ever came back to the county farm from Elkader under the influence of liquor, or that several times he brought beer home in kegs, etc.  He did treat the patron to a small keg of beer on the 4th of July, but each one's share from the small keg was but little.  Dr. Hall, of Elkader, the poor house physician, says it is well and cleanly kept, and can see no cause for complaint.  Mr. Reeves' romance about the steward trying to keep as many paupers there as possible, because he gets paid by the county at so much a head, and makes big money, is nonsense, that even the News knows is untrue.  Mr. Quinn is paid $50/m for their services in caring for the poor house and farm.  All eatables and supplies are furnished by the county.  Supervisor Welch is the superintendent and we trust will investigate Mr. Reeves' complaints and right them if any wrong exists, but not allow the steward to be condemned unless proven quilty.
