Sheetz Surname As linked to my interest in the Strayer, Heckart, Sheetz surnames. The Decendent Tree is a blend of material from Lila nee Sheetz Schneider, web resources and/or my own material. Lila 1910-2010 (& sister Naida) was a life long keeper/researcher of family and Freeport/Decorah area history. Lila grew up on and continued to live on the original 1852 entry farm of Andrew and Catherine Strayer Sheetz.

Overview:
1. My primary interest is generally pioneer history
and includes linking village and neighborhood surnames together for several of the
early generations. Often connections, locations and other data have to be
speculated in order to continue a complex series of inter-related projects.
My web pages are primarily personal study projects for note keeping, but can also jump
start others.
I have a huge number of projects started and rarely return to edit/update
material unless interest is rekindled. Any web pages online are
usually linked off the 'Index Page.' Numerous projects are not put on web
pages but are in draft form or in
the form of photo albums on the 'Photo Hosting Site.' I may have
material for research use in storage, plus will/can upload other people's
material if appropriate. iowaz@swbell.net

John Strayer
brother of Catherine & George
(There is only one known existing picture of John
Strayer and one of his wife Eliz Heckart)
John Strayer along with bro/law John Adam Jr. Heckart,
traveled in the spring of 1851 from Hannibal,
Missouri by steamboat to make original entry into numerous land parcels in the
Freeport/Decorah area mainly looking for potential mill sites. The Heckart/Strayer
mill on the west edge of 'to be' Freeport plat would be up and running by the
spring of 1853
and probably the first functional grist/sawmill in area. Bro/law Andrew Sheetz and sister Caterine Strayer Sheetz would journey from PA to Missouri
in late 1851 to
join John Strayer and Adam Heckart at their Old Clinton Mill on the Salt River
in Monroe Co, MO. In the spring of 1852, John Strayer, Adam Heckart made a
second journey up the Mississippi River to Lansing, Iowa and then over-land to
the Decorah/Freeport valley, once again to explore and enter more land plus
certainly to start construction of a cabin and mill location at Freeport.
On their second trip they were accompanied by in/law Andrew Sheetz who in May of
1852 made his first entry into land a mile north of Freeport which would remain
the Sheetz 'River Edge' Farm into the 2000's. The men would have
returned back to Old Clinton by late summer of 1852. My best guess is they
moved the families to basic over-winter cabins in the fall of 1852 as my
grandmother Winifred Mary Strayer Hunt told of losing several bags of Adam
Heckart's gold in a wagon tip-over crossing a river ford. the river
freezing before they could return, but finding the gold the next spring.
This adds up to moving the families Nov of 1852. Brother George Strayer
had moved from PA in 1854 to Ohio. In 1856, George would travel to
Freeport, Iowa, to join siblings John and Catherine. George would marry in
Freeport and take over some Strayer farmland adjacent and south of Freeport.
