….In 1854, the Spatcher’s were early pioneers five miles south of Westfield village (Fayette) sec 20, Smithfield Twp, on today’s Maynard/Fayette Hwy 150 corner. However, they did not make immediate farmsteads on that land.

....In 1856, bother Thomas & John J. were located in Westfield.Twp, but have not been pinpointed to date, bz/2012. Thomas, dwelling#77 was likely located near Fayette village and John J., dwelling#60, adjacent to Samuel Thompson in sec 35, at the head of Grannis Canyon, 3mi east of Fayette. By 1860, they would have started farmsteads on their 1854 entry farms, 5mi south of Fayette in Smithfield.Twp.

1858…Sept, Julia Ann Toles deeded to A. E. Chambers (s/law of Thomas Spatcher) a small parcel of 3a which included Big Rock and spring (1mi E of Fayette village). In 1861, A.E. Chambers & Thomas Spatcher deeded Big Rock and spring to Ransom N. Soper.

...By the 1860 census, Thomas & John J. have moved onto their sec 20 & sec 17 farms in Smithfield.Twp.
...Note in the 1860 census that two John's were enumerated in Smithfield.Twp, one in sec 17, the other abt 3mi to the NE near Corn Hill P.O. No indication of two separate John Spatcher families has been found, bz/2010&2012.

By 1868, William Spatcher, son of Thomas, had taken over the original entry farm and added 80a: 160a, NE1/4 and 80a, E1/2 of the SE1/4, sec 20, Smithfield Twp.

By 1879, The original Spatcher pioneers are gone from sec’s 20 and 17 of Smithfield Twp, Fay.Co.IA are gone. William, J. Paul owned abt 35a in the NE corner of sec 20, where the Thomas Spatcher homestead cabin/buildings were originally built. The Paul’s have a blacksmith shop along the N/S road in this area which would have been the location of the original homestead. The farm is split up between J. Paul, S. Masters (f/law of Wm. Spatcher), R. Gaynor and Geo Harrison. Father Thomas is deceased. Son William is a blacksmith/carpenter in Brush Creek. John J. a house painter in Fayette.

….Living close to Rueben Sr. Hunt, along the RR near College Hill in the southern edge of Fayette village.…Census conflict: In 1870, Josie is listed as a Skinner; in 1880 as dau, Spatcher, while Roland is a Skinner in both years….If 1880 census is correct, John J. Skinner was back in the Aurora area of IL abt 1875 (son Arthur listed b. IL), then returned to Fayette village before 1880.
