ANDREW2, JAMES1) was born 03 Nov 1824 in New.Rumley.Twp, Harrison.Co.OH, and
died 03 Feb 1903 in Sargent, Custer Co., Neb. He married ELIZA KIRBY 18 Dec 1845
in Perry Twp, Carroll Co, Ohio, daughter of ISAAC KIRBY and ELIZABETH WALTERS.

Notes for ELI ISAAC THOMPSON:
Notes from "TheThompson Genealogy" by T.W. Thompson, 1979 edition---Eli was a
blacksmith by trade. He was a man of vision. He lived far ahead of his day. He
made a set of wings and tried to fly from the top of a building. This man
fore-saw the possibility of flying. Our age has perfected his vision of
yester-year. Eli Isaac Thompson proved up on a homestead in Custer Co.,
Nebraska, in the western part of the state. The U.S. Government patent is now
(1979) in the possession of his grandson Grover Thompson, who lives in Glendo,
Wyoming. Eli spent his last days with his daughter Minerva Thompson Wood, at
Sargent, Nebraska.

From the obituary of John R. Thompson:
FOR YEARS ONE OF THE MOST PROMINENT LAWYERS OF CITY - ACTIVE IN POLITICS AND AN
ENTHUSIASTIC WORKER IN LODGE CIRCLES - FUNERAL MONDAY
The citizens of Hall County and Grand Island today mourn the loss of an esteemed
citizen. For some years the finger of disease laid its finger upon him. He
battled bravely; but for the past few months it was noticeable that the sad
inevitable had come and Judge John R. Thompson was called to his reward which
those who knew him best know will be the everlasting peace and rest promised all
who live bravely and well and do the best they can with life. For many years a
district judge and in the days of the ascendancy of the populist party a
prominent candidate for the nomination for supreme judge and governor, his life
was a busy one and its varied duties were promptly and faithfully met.
Mr. Thompson passed away at his farm in Cameron township yesterday afternoon,
death resulting from tuberculosis. He had been ailing for the last year and his
condition would not permit him to do much work for the last six months. For over
three weeks he was seriously ill and there appeared to be no hope for his
recovery. Relatives called on Mr. Thompson daily and at all times he was
confident he would recover. He was conscious until the very end and talked very
intelligently with his brother. On a recent visit he discussed the political
prospects and wanted to know what Wilson's chances were. At no time did he
suffer or complain of any pain and he died peacefully.
The funeral will take place next Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock, from the
residence at 823 West Second Street. Rev. Gettys of the First M.E. church will
conduct the service at the house and from there the obs------ -----German and
Irish descent. Both were children of early settlers near Maryland, Md. Eli
Thompson and his wife were both born in Carroll county, Ohio. He learned the
blacksmith trade, and followed it until 1864, when he became a resident of
Fayette county, Iowa. There his wife died on Jan.2, 1881. Eight years later he
settled on a homestead in Custer County, Nebraska, where he resided until his
death, Feb. 3, 1903. J. R. Thompson attended the district school from three to
six months each year until he was 18 years old. He then attended the Upper Iowa
university at Fayette, IA., but never completed the full course as he was
dependent upon his own efforts to defray his expenses, which he did by working
upon a farm and teaching school. In 1875, he entered the law department of the
University of Iowa at Iowa City and graduated in 1877, under the instruction of
W. G. Hammond, a most able teacher, then chancellor of the university and also
founder of the law department. After graduating, he opened a law office in
company with his brother W. H. Thompson, in his home town now called Arlington,
Iowa. In 1879 J. R. Thompson moved to Grand Island and opened an office here,
his brother remaining in Arlington. The partnership continued in this way two
years; then W. H. Thompson also moved to this city and they continued in
business together until January, 1892. During the early days of their
partnership they carried on a real estate loan and insurance business, but later
they devoted their attention strictly to the legal profession and won a
prominent place at the bar of the state. Mr. Thompson cast his first
presidential vote for Horace Greeley, and after that time voted with the
democratic party until 1882, when he joined the anti-monopoly party, and until
1891 he might have been considered an independent democrat. He has since
affiliated with the populist party. He was elected to the position of district
judge of this district in 1891 and served three successive terms. He has also
served as city and county attorney by appointment of the city and county board.
Mr. Thompson was a member of the Knights of Pythias, A.O.U.W., Modern Woodmen,
Odd Fellows and the Elks. He was a member of the First Methodist Episcopal
church of this city and contributed largely to its support. He was married on
Oct., 24, 1880 to Lizzie A. of Iowa City. She died Dec. 8, 1888. Five children
were born to this union. Judge Thompson was again married July 25, 1900 to Sarah
A. Jones of Iowa City, IA. The second Mrs. Thompson departed from this earth on
July 8, 1908.
After retiring from the judgeship, Mr. Thompson continued to practice law in
this city and looked after his extensive property interests. He was one of the
three law commissioners of the insurgent Modern Woodmen of Nebraska and in the
last year devoted considerable attention to this work. For some months Mr.
Thompson had retired from business on account of his health and lived out on the
farm with his son in Cameron township.
Five children are left to mourn the loss of their father, Mrs. A. H. Farnsworth,
Mrs. Grace Jones, Mrs. Kate Carr, John P. Thompson and Mrs. D.(B) W. Musser. Mr.
Thompson also leaves two brothers an one sister, the only ones left of a notable
family of nine children, all of whom arrived at maturity. They are L. Roff
Thompson of Des Moines, Mrs. L. L. Wood of Sargent, Nebraska, and W. H. Thompson
of this city. END OF OBITUARY.
THE HISTORY OF HALL COUNTY NEBRASKA, PUBLISHED IN 1920 IN LINCOLN, NEBRASKA HAS
THE FOLLOWING ARTICLE ON PAGE 638:
JUDGE JOHN RICHARD THOMPSON was one of the prominent citizens of Grand Island
where for more than thirty-six years he was a leading lawyer and served as judge
of this district for three consecutive terms.
Mr. Thompson was born at Perryville, Ohio, August 6, 1850, a son of Eli and
Eliha (Kirby) Thompson, both natives of Carrol County, Ohio, where they were
married and where they made their home until 1864 when they became residents of
Fayette County, Iowa. Here the mother passed away January 2, 1881, and eight
years later the father came to Nebraska and secured a homestead in Custer County
where he spent the remainder of his days, passing away February 3, 1903.
John R. Thompson attended the district school from three to six months each year
until he was eighteen years of age. He then attended Upper Iowa University at
Fayette, Iowa, but never completed a full course as he was dependent upon his
own resources to defray his expenses, which he did by working on a farm and
teaching school. In 1875 he entered the law department of the University of Iowa
at Iowa City, graduating in 1877, under the instruction of W. G. Hammond, a most
able teacher, then chancellor of the University, and founder of the law
department. He then joined his brother, W. H. Thompson, and engaged in the
practice of law in their home town, Brush Creek, now Arlington, Iowa where
Thompson Brothers had opened an office the year before to earn the money needed
to defray expenses to complete their law studies. In February, 1879 John R.
opened an office in Grand Island, Nebraska while the brother remained in Iowa.
In June 1881, W. H. came to Grand Island the partnership continued until 1892,
when John R. Thompson was elevated to the bench of the district court of the
eleventh judicial district, consisting of eleven counties, where he served three
successive terms of four years each. His decisions were always fair and
impartial and he was held in the highest esteem by members of the bar and by all
with whom he came in contact. After this he continued the practice of his
profession until his death September 29, 1915.
October 24, 1880, Mr. Thompson was united in marriage to Miss Lizzie A. Pryce of
Iowa City. She passed away December 8, 1888. Judge Thompson was again married
July 25, 1900, to Sarah A. Jones of Iowa City and her death occurred in Grand
Island eleven years ago. Of the first marriage were born five children: Callie
E., wife of Dr. A. H. Farnsworth; Grace, the wife of Julius Jones of Grand
Island; Catherine, the wife of Wm Pyne, mayor and editor of a newspaper at
Wendell, Idaho; John P., a ranchman of Hall County, Nebraska; and Elizabeth the
wife of Benjamin Musser, of New York.
Judge Thompson was a member of and general contributor to the First Methodist
Church of Grand Island, and a member of several fraternal organizations. He
served the city and county as attorney and stood for all the things that helped
to make for the betterment of the community. The city is indebted to Judge
Thompson for the beautiful public park known as "Pioneer Park" as it was largely
through his persistent agitation that this tract was set aside as a park instead
of being platted and sold for residence properties. END OF ARTICLE
I know from my Mother, Elizabeth Thompson, that the Judge spent a lot of time in
Boulder, Colorado attempting to ease his problem with "consumption" which is the
name given tuberculosis. Bill Thompson told me that he was told that the Judge
slept in a tent in his back yard in an attempt to get relief from the disease.
George Carr told me that when the farms were purchased in Nebraska they all had
sod houses on them. George also told me that the Judge owned the three houses on
the block his house was on. Grace lived in one according to George, and he
believed that the others were rented out.
My mother, Elizabeth, also told me that Wild Bill Hitchcock and William Jennings
Bryan were guests at their home when she was a child. Also that the Judge had
convinced the City to have a combination cemetery, Catholic and Protestant in
Grand Island. Supposedly the first such in the country.

Notes for WILLIAM HENRY THOMPSON:
From the History of Hall Co, Neb.
WILLIAM HENRY THOMPSON is one of the most widely known and highly respected
citizens of Nebraska, having been a resident of Grand Island for more that
thirty- eight years. A native of Ohio, Mr. Thompson was born at Perrysville,
Carroll County, December 14, 1853. His parents were Eli and Eliza (Kirby)
Thompson, both natives of Ohio, where they were married and where they made
their home until 1864 when they became residents of Fayette County, Iowa. Here
the mother passed away January 2, 1881, and eight years later the father came to
Nebraska and secured a homestead in Custer County where he made his home until
his death which occurred Februarv 3, 1903. The grandfathers of W. H. Thompson
were of Scotch descent the representatives of very early families in the city of
Baltimore. Maryland. The paternal grandmother of our subject was of Holland
Dutch descent, while the maternal grandmother was of Irish extraction. Mr.
Thompson acquired his early education in the public and select schools of
Fayetie County, Iowa. This was supplemented by a course in Upper Iowa University
at Fayette. Iowa. In the fall of 1875 he and his brother John R. enrolled in the
law department of the State University at Iowa City. At the end of two terms
their savings, earned by working on farms, railroading and teaching school were
nearly exhausted. It was decided that in order to earn money to pay their way
through school one of them should open a law office and accordingly this was
done. W. H. took charge of the law business of Thompson Brothers, lawyers, at
Brush Creek, now Arlington, Iowa, while John R. continued at school and
graduated. He then took charge of the office and W. H. took up his studies where
he had left otf the year before, graduating in the spring of 1877. In the fall
of 1876 he had been admitted to the bar by Judge Granger, who later became a
member of the Supreme Court of that state. In 1878 the brothers decided that one
of them should attend to their practice while the other should look up a more
desirable location. In February, 1879 an office was opened in Grand Island,
Nebraska, which was conducted by John R. until June 1881, when he was joined by
his brother; this partnership continued until January 1892 when John R. became
judge of the District Court. It will be seen that for forty-three years W. H.
Thompson has been continuously in the practice of his profession and during the
thirty-eight years of his practice at the bar of Hall County he has transacted a
very large volume of legal business. His practice has extended to all courts of
the state and to the Federal Courts, and on account of his ability as a lawyer
and his standing with the bar he has commanded the respect of the courts and the
members of his profession. The assiduous and un relaxing attention which he
gives to his clients and the thoroughness with which he prepares his cases have
been strong elements in his success and he is known as one of the best trial
lawyers of the state. M'r. Thompson has always been a Democrat. In 1886 he was
elected county attorney for Hall County and served one term, refusing to be a
candidate for re-election. In 1890 he was nominated for Congress in the "Big
Third" district which then comprised all of the state north of the Platte River
except Douglas and Sarpy Counties. He has been a delegate to nearly every state
convention since he has resided in Nebraska. He was delegate-at-large to the
Democratic National Convention in 1892, and was chairman of the Nebraska
delegation, and was an ardent supporter of Grover Cleveland, the nominee of the
convention for president. He was delegate- at-large to the Democratic National
Convention in 1896 at Chicago, and was a supporter of William Jennings Bryan,
and was chosen National Committeeman. He was also delegate-at-large to the
National convention at Kansas City in 1900 and again at St. Louis in 1904. He
was defeated for delegate to the Denver Convention in 1908 which nominated
Bryan, but took an active part in the convention through courtesy of the
Nebraska delegation. He was delegate-at-large to the convention at St. Louis in
1916 which nominated Woodrow Wilson for the second term and was a member of the
notification committee. He has been an enthusiastic worker in his party and
played an important part in its management. In 1900 he was candidate for United
States Senator to succeed Senator Thurston. In 1902 he was a candidate for
governor against Mickey but was defeated by a small majority. From 1895 to 1899
he served as mayor of Grand Island and has always been an advocate of those
things which he thought were for the best interests of his home city and state.
At West Union, Iowa, September 7, 1879, was solemnized the marriage of William
H. Thompson and Miss Nettie I. Hutchinson, a native of Michigan but reared in
Iowa, and who for a time attended the school taught by her future husband. Her
parents were John and Martha Hutchinson, her father being an attorney in good
standing and county recorder while his daughter was his deputy at the time of
her marriage. Mr. and Mrs. Thompson have had four children : Edith L., became
the wife of Wallace E. Porter and died August 31, 1904; Mattie died in infancy;
Grover married Lena Neitfeldt, and is operating a ranch in Wyoming; Lloyd G.,
married Aimee Ruth Schwyn, and is a lawyer of Grand Island. The family are
members of the Presbyterian church and Mr. Thompson is a member of several
fraternal organizations, including the Modern Woodmen .of America, B. P. O. of
Elks and others. Mr. Thompson has recently been appointed by Governor McKelvie a
member of the building committee for the erection of the new state capitol. In
this as in all other positions in which Mr. Thompson has been placed he can be
depended upon to do credit to himself and to the people whose interests he
serves.

THOMPSON, William Henry, judge and U. S. senator, was born at Perrysville, Ohio,
December 14, 1853, son of Eli and Eliza (Kirby) Thompson. He was educated at a
private school in Iowa and at the Upper (Iowa University - 1872 - 1875) and
graduated LLB at State University of Iowa in 1877, having defrayed the expenses
of his education by his own efforts. For several years he practiced law with his
brother, John Richard Thompson, first at Brush Creek (later Arlington), Iowa and
after 1881 at Grand Island, Nebr., until the brother was elevated to the bench.
While he was eminently successful as a criminal lawyer, he also had a large
civil practice, covering the entire state. He was an organizer and director of
the State Bank of Grand Island and a trustee of Grand Island College. When the
office of county attorney was created by the legislature in 1886 he was chosen
as the first county attorney of Hall County. During 1887-88 he was the city
attorney of Grand Island and during 1895-98 he was the mayor of the city. A
stalwart Democrat in politics, he was chairman of the Nebraska delegation to the
Democratic National Convention in 1892 and was a delegate-at-large to the
Democratic National Convention in 1896 when he helped to nominate William
Jennings Bryan (q.v.) of whom he was an intimate friend. At the latter
convention he was chosen Democratic National Committeeman for Nebraska and
served on the executive committee of the national organization until 1900.
He was also a delegate at large to the national conventions of 1900, 1904, 1908,
and 1920 and a Democratic nominee for governor of Nebraska in 1902. During 1920
- 1924 he was again Democratic national committeeman for Nebraska. In 1924
Justice Chester H. Aldrich (q.v.) of the Supreme Court of Nebraska died and Gov.
Charles W. Bryan (q.v.) appointed Thompson to fill the vacancy. In the following
November he was elected on a non-partisan ticket for the full term of six years.
Thus at an age when most men have retired from active life he began a new
chapter in his career. Many of his opinions became new precedents, notably in
the cases of State v. First Bank (114 Nebr., 423) to the effect that an
agreement to pay witnesses by a party is contrary to public policy and void;
Sallander v. Life Insurance Co. (112 Neb., 629) which modified the evidence rule
"that you must either produce a document when it is called for or never", and
State v. State Bank (116 Nebr.,223) overruling the rather famous decision in the
case of Glove Publishing Co., v. State Bank (41 Nebr.,175) which had overruled
seven previous decisions to the effect that pending actions are affected by the
repeal of a statute. By dissenting in the case of Eugene v. Union State Bank
(118 Nebr.,105) he opened the way to a result not only highly creditable to
himself but beneficial to the jurisprudence of the whole country. The other
justices concurred in holding that the treaty with Sweden and Norway which
provided that "subjects of the contracting parties in the respective states may
freely dispose of their property." rendered inapplicable to a Norwegian subject
residing in Nebraska, the requirement of the subsequently enacted state
homestead law, that a conveyance of the homestead must be executed by both
spouses. The case was taken to the Supreme Court of the United States (Todok v.
Union State Bank: 281 U.S. 449) which reversed the majority opinion of the
Nebraska court and sustained Thompson in his dissent, holding that it was not
the purpose of the treaty to give an alien an advantage which the citizen did
not enjoy. Thompson had refused a reelection to the bench, but when Senator
Robert Belcher Howell died in 1933, Gov. Bryan appointed him for the unexpired
term and he took his seat on May 27th, serving until December 1934 when his
successor qualified. He was a member of the commission which had charge of the
construction of the new state capitol of Nebraska. In religion he was a
Presbyterian. He was married Sept. 7th 1879 to Nettie I., daughter of John
Hutchinson, an attorney of West Union, Iowa, and they had four children: Edith,
who married Wallace E. Porter; Mattie, Grover and Lloyd G. Thompson. He died at
Grand Island, June 6, 1937.
From the 'Thompson Scrapbook', Des Moines Resister, May 30,. 1933: "New Senator,
William Henry Thompson, former Nebraska Supreme Court Judge, who recently was
appointed US Senator from NB to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Senator
R.B. Howell of Omaha. Charles W. Bryan, the Governor of NB and brother to
William Jennings Bryan, named his friend to the Senate. W.H. Thompson, the
"Little Giant" of Nebraska politics, who rose from a blacksmith's son to a State
Supreme Court Judge, prepared to take a US Senate seat sought but failed to win
more than a quarter century ago. Dubbed the "Little Giant" for his oratory, the
Grand Island Attorney who is about 5'4" tall, was a close friend of both the
Bryan's. The Governor appointed W. H. Thompson, who is 79, to finish the late
Senator R.B. Howell's term. Thompson took the 'stump' for William Jennings
Bryant in each of his campaigns and was one of the leaders of the NB delegation
to the 1896 National Convention, where Bryan first won his presidential
nomination. The two were great friends, Bryan frequently going to Grand Island
to spend several days visiting Mr. Thompson. Friends recall how the two used to
sit on the lawn and chat. Mr. Thompson has served as Mayor of Grand Island and
as County Attorney. He was a Democratic Candidate for governor, narrowly missing
the honor in 1900. A prodigious reader, he was a storehouse of information on
Democratic policies and wrote more than one State platform. He won a reputation
both as a trial lawyer and as a stump speaker. He would be one of the driving
forces in the building of the NB Capital Building.

THOMAS ANDREW4, ANDREW3, ANDREW2, JAMES1) was born 03 May 1886 in Grand Island,
Neb, and died 1970 in Casper area, WY. He married LENA MARIE NEITFELDT 24 Aug
1907 in Grand Island, Neb. She was born 11 Aug 1888 in Grand Island, Neb, and
died 1973 in Casper area, WY.
Notes for GROVER THOMPSON:
After Grover's grandfather Eli Isaac Thompson died, Grover inherited the
original family U.S. Government patent in Custer Co., Nebraska. Eli had removed
from Brush Creek, Iowa in about 1881. Grover left home in 1907 and took up a 640
acre homestead in western Nebraska, which he sold in 1913 and traveled farther
west to the open range country of Wyoming. Grover started with 160 acres on a
creek and built it up to a 4000 acre rand. In 1933 Grover took a job as land
appraiser for the Federal Bank of Omaha. And followed that with the job of State
Appraiser for Home Owners Loan Corp, managing a team of appraisers. Grover,
after about 10 years would retire to the Ranch.
Platte County Heritage Book published 1981/
Grover Thompson left his home at GRand Island, Neb in 1907, not to return for
the next 18 years. He and his wife, Lena Neitfeld Thompson, migrated to Western
Nebraska where they settled on the "Sidney Divide" at the post office at
Leafdale. The home was a large stone house, situated in a Swedish community. W.H.
Thompson, Grover' father, came in to ownership of this 640 acre ranch for
payment of a debt. Here two sons, William and Otto, were born in 1908 and 1912.
In the summer of 1912 Grover was invited to join his friend, Mr. Brothers, to
visit the Al Hilton family who had a 160 acre ranch on Horseshoe Creek. Grover
fell in love with the country and especially the trout fishing in the stream. He
immediately began to deal with the Hiltons for the property. He sold the
Nebraska land and paid $4000 for the Wyoming land. In September 1913 he moved
his family via team and wagon to the present side of the Grover Thompson Jr.
home west of Glendo. Here he raised horses and mules while adding land to his
original 160 acres. However, with the advent of motorized vehicles, raising work
animals became less profitabel so GRover soon purchased 40 head of cows.
In 1933 Grover took a job in Casper as land appraiser for the Federal Land Bank
of Omaha, then later as an appraiser for Home Owners Loan Corp. After 10 years
he retired to his ranch until his death. During his time in business while he
was living in Casper, his son Otto managed the ranch until his untimely death in
1935 of scarlet fever, at which time Wlliam or Bill as his is better known,
moved there and stayed until his parents returned in 1943.
Two more sons were born after Grover and Lena came to live in Wyoming. Lloyd
born in 1918 became a second lieutenant in the U. S. Air Force during World War
ll and was lost during a light bombing attack over Germany; Grover Jr was born
in 1923 and came into ownership of the family ranch when Grover passed away in
1970 and lena in 1973.

From the History of Hall Co, Nebraska, p. 593.
LLOYD G. THOMPSON, who is engaged in the practice of law at Grand Island, his
native city, is the son of William H. and Nettie I. (Hutchinson) Thompson, a
record of whom is found on other pages of this volume. n the schools of Grand
Island Mr. Thompson acquired his education, spending two years in high school
after which he attended Su- wanee Military Academy of Tennessee, where he took
preparatory work prior to entering the University of Colorado, remaining in
college but one year. Following this he devoted one year to the study of music
in France and Italy, but upon his return to the United States entered the
Creighton law school and after graduation from this institution located for the
practice of his profession at Miami, Florida, remaining there a year. Returning
to Grand Island, he formed a partnership with his father, being engaged in the
practice of law when the World War began. Responding to the call for men in
October, 1917, Mr. Thompson entered the American Field service, soon seeing
active service in France. From this branch he was transferred to the aviation
section of the United States Army as a private, later becoming a cadet and then
received a commission as second lieutenant. For seven months he was instructor
of aviation in France before being sent to Foggio, Italy, as instructor in the
use of the Caproni bombing machine. After serving in this capacity he went to
the Italian front for active fighting where he remained until the armistice was
signed. Upon receiving his discharge the young aviator returned home, having
rendered efficient service to his country and earned a creditable record for a
young man of twenty- six. Mr. Thompson was united in marriage to Miss Ruth
Schwin, a native of Hall County. He has again taken up the practice of law in
partnership with his father where new laurels await him.
