Thompson Reunions

1905, Aug 22...1st Thompson Reunion
....The Thompson's had their first Reunion on the west 'bench' of the Alexander Creek behind/west of Walter Eugene and Amanda Katura Thompson Hunt's farm, 1+miles southwest of Fayette.  Forty-five were present, five visitors, with thirteen families represented.  We had a splendid time on a hot day.
The First Annual Thompson Reunion, 1905
….On Tuesday at the home of Walter E. Hunt, whose mother was Amanda Katura Thompson, daughter of Samuel I and Martha Sherman Thompson, was held the First Annual Thompson Reunion. Fifty one years ago, in 1854, three Thompson brothers Samuel 1, Morris J. and William came into Fayette County from Carroll County, Ohio, initially taking up land 1 miles west of Taylorville. They were followed in the next few years by three other brothers and two sisters. Their parents Zachariah and Priscilla Albaugh Thompson followed the children in 1865.
….Samuel and William have passed away, but Morris J. still lives, also some of the younger brothers and sisters. The families have become much scattered though more are living in and near Arlington than any other place. In order to keep the different members of the family in touch with each other, Mrs. W. E. Hunt (Amanda Katura Thompson), who is a daughter of Samuel Thompson suggested the idea of holding a family reunion. This with the assistance of her family she arranged for at her farm and home one mile to the south of Grandview Cemetery in Fayette.
….Nearly 150 invitations were issued and when we remember that ;many of these were family invitations we get some idea of the present number of descendents. It was not expected that all could attend as some are living as far away as California.
….About fifty however were able to be present. They arrived about 10 o’clock and all went to the Maple grove on the west side of the creek which crosses the Hunt Farm
….Here the tables were spread for dinner and again for supper. The younger people made the acquaintance of cousins whom they had never seen before ;and all enjoyed themselves. For the purpose of continuing the reunions an organization was effected with Morris J. Thompson of Arlington, President, and Miss Flora Hunt, Amanda Katura Thompson’s Daughter, still living on the farm, Secretary.
….A glance at the personnel of those attending the picnic as well as those living in the county who were unable to attend indicates a remarkable strength of character running through the entire family.
….Zach Caleb 1 Thompson, the father was a minister of the Christian Church. The principles of honesty, uprightness and temperance as well as the theology of his church were instilled in children and fully accepted by them.
….The great majority of the children of the third and fourth generations are firm adherents ;to the faith of their father. With few exceptions they are temperance men and women and several vote the prohibition ticket. Arlington Newspaper, 1905.
