Tunnel
Mill Company project,
the Waterbury Tunnel
...In the early 1870s, the idea was concocted to tunnel/cut 150ft through the
'hogback' ridge in the Big Rock loop of the Volga River to create a major 30ft
fall of water for a woolen mill.
...Shares in the 'Tunnel Mill Company' projects were sold and about 60a of land
obtained.
...Winter of 1873/1874, black powder blasting & digging started by a crew.
...Hiram Waterbury was the ramrod on the project; Chauncey Smith, farmer from
Frog Hollow was the main black powder blaster.
...The project ended with a 20-30ft channel into the cliff side by early summer
of 1874. The 'compnay' probably finding out it was too extensive an
undertaking with the needed financing and resources available.
...Today (2000s) the project looks like just a natural
occlusion, not a tunnel nor rock cut.
The objective:
...The big dream
was to blast and cut a 150ft tunnel and channel
through the hogback ridge of limestone creating a mill sluice with a
fall of about 30ft to the Volga River on the other side of the hill.
... The intent was to establish a woolen carding
mill as several large flocks of sheep were already being raised/pastured in the Fayette and Big Rock area. Such a mill could
also be set up for sawing timber and grinding grist, or even to supply power for
mechanic and furniture operations. At the time there was a water mill at
Fayette village, two at Albany and one at Lima. Likely the Tunnel Mill
Co's primary objective was to get a big 'fall' of water power and to get a
carding mill operational. bz/2022
...In the 1860>1870+, there several flocks of sheep around Fayette.
...The rails arrived at Fayette from the south in 1873 & went north/west 1880+.
...Livestock transport back/forth to the west would become common & larger
flocks possible.
...By the early 1870s with thoughts of rails arriving there would be
'conversation' on Main.St, Fayette about the possibility of tunneling 150 feet
through the hogback ridge a mile+ east of Fayette in the Big Rock area.
...With a fall of 30 feet in such a short distance, there would be major water
power throughout the year for a new wool carding mill (which also could supply
power for carpentry, flour/grist, sawing lumber).
...So the dream was hatched, and shares sold to a few
businessmen and gentlemen farmers around Main.St, Fayette.
...The 'Tunnel Mill Company' was formed by late 1873, with Hiram Waterbury would
be the
main 'ramrod' on the proect, which would become known at 'the Waterbury tunnel.'
...Winter of 1873/1874, work on the Waterbury tunnel and commenced
for a few months.
...Chauncey Smith from Frog Hollow was the black powder blaster on the project.
...The reason the project ended by have been that Hiram Waterbury became sick...
.....More likely tunneling was not functional due to the composition of the
limestone, the isolation of the location and resources available.
.....A rock cut such as was being made at the Fayette depot and west of Fayette
at the time, may have been more probable. Chauncey Smith has been one of
the major powder blasters on the cut project.
...For whatever reasons the Waterbury Tunnel was abandoned probably by summer of
1874, after only moderate progress of 20 to 30 feet into the face of the
limestone cliff/hogback.
...Today (2000s) the 'tunnel' is a rather short 'cut' into the hillside that
looks like a natural occurrence.
...Likely, from the start, the Tunnel Mill Company project
was not well thought out, with no experienced millwrights or masons involved in
planning, nor recognition of the major logistical problems.
Some timeline notes
the Waterbury Tunnel
Of the Westfield and
Fayette valley:
...The Volga River valley of the Westfield & Fayette villages was
once an Indian camp/village area.
...Fayette.Co.IA north of the 'Admission Trail' opened for the 'white tide' in
1849/50.
...A few merchants gathered around a saw/grist mill, forming Westfield village,
platted early 1850s.
...In 1855, construction started on the Seminary (College Hall), resulting in
Fayette being platted.
...The Seminary/UIU opened for the first students 1857Jan.
....UIU timeline history is on the Hurd page

...Fayette/Westfield grew to a rather self sufficient village
of several hundred citizens.
...1850 to1873+, commerce was by wagon & sled to other villages & Mississippi
River ports.
...The rails would come from Marion.IA, ending at Fayette in 1873.
...The 'First Cut' at the Fayette depot & 'Second Cut' west of Fayette were
finished by 1875
...1873Sept...Rails came to Fayette going south & to Chicago, starting a 2nd series of
boom years.
...Not until 1880+ were rails were laid going N from Fayette & Albany/Lima.

...1874Feb12...West.Union.IA paper: Fayette news; Many lovely days of late have softened the previous severity of winter. Yesterday we took a ride to the tunnel, where Mr. Hiram Waterbury and his laborers are carrying on the greatest natural improvement of the day around us. Blasting through rock to the extent of 130-140 feet to make a channel into which the raging Volga may pour its tempestuous tide for a water privilege, the propriety of which is yet undeveloped. The scenery was wild and picturesque in the extreme and abounded in reminders of New England ruggedness.
....1938Sep15...Fayette.IA paper: From
'Chats with Old Timers' by O.W. Stevenson (Fayette attorney & historian);
One evening recently I (O.W.Stevenson) spent a very historically exiterating
evening with some folks I feel like calling 'three Spry Old Girls from Frog
Hollow (north area from Albany). They were Mrs. Susan King of Fayette,
Mrs. Frances Corkery of West Union and Mrs. Lillian Miller of Yucalpa.CA.
they were three daughters of Chauncey Smith, who was one of the very early settlers (early
1850s) in Westfield.Twp (in the Frog Hollow area north of Albany). I understand he was the man who in later years
(1873) blasted out the (railroad) rock cut at the Fayette depot area....and
who started blasting through the 'blackbone on the Volga
River above (upstream) Big Rock, for what was known as the "Waterbury Tunnel"
project.
......His daughters tell that Chauncey Smith, who evidently was
the best powder
blaster (black powder) around here in an early day.
Note: Rather than trying to tunnel through the hogback ridge at Big Rock, a more successful plan given enough resources could possibly have been to 'cut' through the hogback, much like the Rock Cut of 1873+, near the Fayette depot area.

The tunnel is to be about 150ft long, and gives a fall of 28 feet--- and taking the water out the way of the river, making a good site for mills. The Upper Iowa University is located at Fayette. The late addition to its business capacity, the railroad, gives it quite a business impetus. It is also incorporated.

His informant, Billy Hughes was once a blacksmith at Albany, said that the tunnel was to be built in connection with a projected woolen mill.
