Wrench, Rench
surname

Plush, shag, mohair, silk weaving and manufacturing family
of the Shutford/Banbury district, Oxfordshire County, England.

Several members came to New York state about 1830 as weavers, millers, farmers.
My primary interest has been backtracking from my ggGrandmother Elizabeth Wrench Hunt 1830-1901, of Fayette.Iowa.
Much of the resource information comes from the footwork of my distant Hunt cousin, Skip.Baker.
Major tree information has been supplied by online contacts, plus online data.

To understand the plush industry and weaving read this pamphlet:

Line of worsted looms in the Wrench factory were in the same building as the smaller line of  silk looms.

Plush from Shutford/Banbury, a finer and higher quality fabric compared to heavier shag and velvet.

Wrench burials
 in Fayette Co, Iowa

Elizabeth Wrench Hunt, my ggGrandmother is the only Wrench that lived in Fayette.Co.IA, that I know about.  She was born at Utica, Oneida.Co.NY, while her father was in America for a few years, attempting to set up Plush and Mohair manufacturing.  The climate/humidity would not work for Plush making so the family returned to Shutford.England shortly after Elizabeth was born.  Elizabeth would marry Reuben Hunt in Shutford and return to New York in the mid1850's.  Reuben had been a weaver in the Plush factories.  Before marriage Reuben and Elizabeth, both with apparently great voices, sang together and were well know, even entertaining before the Queen, as the Wrench family due to prize level plush had connections with the Monarchy..  By the time Reuben came to NY he was a master mason and bricklayer as the need for weavers to leave England was minimal.  Because of New York mason contacts, Reuben came to Fayette village in March 1857  to work on the new large limestone block college/seminary being built on the edge of the frontier.  Reuben became the master mason of the project when it was finished.  He then went to Ames, being a bricklayer on the original college building, before returning to Fayette. The family joined him in Fayette in Sept. 1857.  While working on the UIU building, Rueben had started a small frame home on south Washington.St in Fayette,  just below College Hill, which he would make limestone and brick additions too and live in until Eliz died in 1901, after which time he would live with his sons until he died in 1907.

Reuben Hunt & Elizabeth Wrench 1875, Fayette.IA

Reuben Hunt & Elizabeth Wrench, 1890, Fayette.IA

Hunt home, started 1856 at the south end of Washington.St, below College Hill, Fayette.IA, circa 1900.
Small frame portion on the right was the original structure, with the limestone & brick portion coming shortly.

Reuben Hunt was born April 29, 1823, Eydon, Northamptonshire Co, England.
In 1846, at the age of 23, Reuben married Elizabeth Wrench who was 16, in Oxfordshire.
The Wrench family had been in the fine cloth and plush trade for generations around the countryside to the northwest of London, in the Shurford/Banbury area.
Elizabeth first became pregnant at the age of 18.  The marriage would produce ten children.
The couple had three children while still in England, Thomas (9/6/1849, b. Shutford), Walter Eugene (6/26/1851, b. Banbury), and Amelia Elizabeth (8/6/1853), b. Banbury.

----Reuben had to petition the local clergy to sail for America. Permission was needed to leave England at this time.  Reuben and Elizabeth were performing/singing together before the wealthy/royality and often paid in wine.  Reuben was drinking too much, Elizabeth giving him the ultimatum to stop or whe was leaving him.  To 'escape' the culture he learned the stone mason trade with plans of immigrating to to New York state. The clergy would not sign Reuben's papers as he was "out of favor" with them, so he missed his scheduled ship which was blown of course in a storm and directed toward Australia and sank. The family was able to take the next ship out. In late 1853, with his wife (23) and three young children (4,2,0), Reuben (30) sailed for the United States. The family settled in Chenango County of New York state, the area where Elizabeth Wrench had been born when her father had moved from England to start a "plush" manufacturing trade. Elizabeth's brother had already immigrated to the area.

----Apparently still searching for a location to settle and to make a living as a stone mason, in March of 1857, Reuben (34) left the family in New York and set out for the new northeastern Iowa village of Fayette. It is possible he had been called to Fayette as result of some past contact with a stone mason, or had heard about work available in the building of the seminary or College Hall.  The first building for the new college in newly platted Fayette was under construction out of native limestone.  Walter Reuben Hunt, Reuben Sr.'s grandson would later state that Reuben worked on and eventually became the head stone mason near the end of completion of College Hall.

----Upon arriving in the Fayette valley, Reuben purchased three acres of land, at the south end of Washington Street, and on the east side of the road that went up what was, and still is called College Hill.  Reuben proceeded to build a small frame house.  He would later make additions of limestone and brick. The three acres was a strip of lots bordered on the north by the present road to Wadena, and running into the base of College Hill.  One of his son's, Reuben Wrench would end up living in a farm/house right at the base of the hill, however the original Hunt house would be about 150 feet south of the Wadena Road, just to north of the old train via duct.  When the railroad came into Fayette in 1873, Reuben would lose a part of his land to the RR right-away. However, by this time, he apparently began buying 40-50 acres of land to the east of the Hunt lots and the land on the SW top of present day College Hill. Reuben Wrench Hunt would own and farm this area by the late 1800's and into the 1900's, while his older brother Walter Eugene Hunt (my gGrandfather) would farm the area just to the SW of College Hill and the cemetery, after moving from the furniture/undertaking store on the corner of Water and Main Streets.

----In September of 1857, five months after arriving in Iowa, Elizabeth(27) and the three children (6,4 and 2) joined Reuben in Fayette.

----Seven more children were born to the couple in the Hunt house at Fayette;  Washington (1856), Flora F. (probably 1858), Fannie S. (1/2/1860), Reuben Wrench (6/26/1865), William A. (2/1868), Jesse E. (1871, died in the first year), Lucy A. 1872).

----Reuben worked as a skilled stone mason, brick layer and plasterer most of his life in Fayette. Native limestone was his specialty. Like many early Fayette residents, Reuben and his family were members of the First Methodist Church. Reuben died February 9, 1907, and along with his wife of 55 years, are buried in lot 90, at Grandview Cemetery, which is on the southern hill overlooking the village of Fayette, Iowa, and just up College Hill southwest of the Hunt house.

----The only personal tale we have was passed down is from Reuben grandson's Walter Reuben Hunt, is that Reuben Sr.'s father or grandfather in England, had invented the safety pin but someone he knew copied it from him and rushed out and got a patent.  The Hunt's that we know were tinkerers.

----Reuben Sr. and Elizabeth Wrench Hunt would live out their lives in the Fayette Valley, raising there family, dying and being buried there in Grandview. All but two of the children would leave the valley to settle, generally in the western states as was the trend at the time. Walter Eugene Hunt and Reuben Wrench Hunt would remain in Fayette to raise their families. Only one other Hunt would remain in Fayette to raise a Family, Walter Eugene's son Walter Reuben Hunt. Walter Reuben's daughter Eleanor Hunt Zbornik (1919-1965) would be the last Hunt to remain in Fayette to raise a family. Walter Reuben (1887-1977) and Winifred Mary Strayer Hunt would both die in 1977 and be the last Hunt Clan member, after about 120yrs, making a living by farming in the Fayette valley.
