....His obituary says that DeWitt was legally adopted and raised by his uncle, Joseph Hart Chittenden, after his father died and left his mother with a large family. One family paper mentions a birth name of Giles and states that this record was published for the DAR. The 'Uncle' connections has not been established.
....Note....DeWitt's wife is a daughter of J.H.'s sister Sally Chittenden.
....After moving to Fayette.Co.IA, Dewitt returned to Vermont for a few years.

Fayette County Portrait and Biographical Album - 1891...De Witt Chittenden
....De Witt Chittenden, a prosperous farmer and Secretary of th Fayette Creamery Association, is a native of Putnam, Washington County, N. Y., his birth having occurred on the 17th of August 1827.
...He was reared to manhood in the home of an uncle (likely from marriage, Joseph Hart Chittenden) who resided in Orwell, Vt., and his education was acquired in the public schools. He spent his boyhood days in work upon the farm and also worked at milling, both is grist and saw mills for his uncle.
...Having attained to mature years, he was married in St Lawrence County, N. Y. October 15, 1856 to Miss Adelia P. Sheldon, daughter of Deacon John Sheldon, and a native of Hopkinton, N.Y., born March 24, 1835.
...By their union have been born three children yet living, two sons and a daughter: Martha A., the eldest, born August 16, 1857, is the wife of A.A. Knight, Jr., and resides in Manchester, Iowa: Fred S., born August 5, 1862, married Dora Penhollow and resides in Fayette; Frank R., born July 18, 1864, wedded Annie Doughty and operates his father's farm in Smithfield Township. They also lost one child, May Emma, the youngest, who was born January 27, 1859, and died in October following.
....In the spring of 1861 Mr. Chittenden, with his family, emigrated  to Smithfield.Twp, Fayette.Co.IA., where he was engaged in farming until the autumn of 1862, returned to Vermont.
...In the Green Mountain State he once more gave his attention to agricultural pursuits until the fall of 1867, when he again came to Fayette County, which has since been his home. At that time he was in limited circumstances, and at first purchased by eighty acres of land. However, as the result of his thrift and industry, his financial resources were increased, and he added to his original purchase until he now owns a well-improved farm of two hundred and forty acres in Smithfield Township, which is being operated by his youngest son. Mr. Chittenden continued to carry on his farm until the fall of 1888, when he removed to Fayette where he now makes his home.
...In 1890 he was chosen Secretary of the Fayette Creamery Association and has since served in that position with credit to himself and to the satisfaction of the shareholders of the company.

...In politics he is a Republican and has held several local offices. He has served as Township Trustee, Clerk and Tax Collector, and as a member of the School Board. He is a nonaffiliated Mason and, with his wife, is a member of the Congregational Church.

Obit:  The funeral of Deacon DeWitt Chittenden was held in the First Congregational Church of Fayette, Iowa, Thursday, November 2, 1911 at 1 o’clock p.m. The service was conducted by the pastor, Rev. Chas. N. Sinnet, and the text was from Psalm 121:1: "I will lift up mine unto the hills from whence cometh my help." The church was filled with the citizens of Fayette, who had always held Mr. Chittenden in high esteem. Many old friends and neighbors came in from the country. A. J. Fox, undertaker, conducted the service in a very efficient manner. The music was of a very high and helpful quality: Dr. Chas. D. Neff, organist; singers: Dr. A. E. Bennett and wife; Mrs. Chas. D. Neff; Mr. J. H. Boyce and Mrs. J. H. Budd, the latter giving a solo which was very comforting. The bearers were Mr. Fred Chittenden, Mr. Frank Chittenden, Mr. Austin Knight, and the grandsons Eugene Knight, Karl Knight and Isaac Paul.
....Deacon DeWitt Chittenden was born in Putnam, Washington County, N. Y., August 17, 1827, and passed away in his home in Fayette, October 31st, 1911. Early in life he went to reside with an uncle in Orwell, Vt., who was a man of sturdy and upright character, and who found in the lad whom he had taken to his home an active and faithful helper in all things. The elements of strength and Christian nobility which he had inherited from a long line of worthy ancestors he cultivated diligently. At an early age in his life he united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, afterwards transferring his membership to the Congregational Church. In 1868, soon after his removal to the farm near Fayette, he and his faithful wife united with the Congregational Church here. His earnest faith and faithful work were at once recognized and he was soon appointed a Deacon of the church, and he has held this office most worthily ever since. But few churches in our state have had the benefit of such a service of over forty-three years, and it is doubtful if any more upright and diligent service can be found. Thoroughly conscientious in all things, the entire community, like all others where he had lived, looked upon him as a true type of active Christianity. Quiet, modest and unassuming, he steadfastly followed his Master. His attendance at church from the farm, and since he removed to Fayette, has been so constant that, like others who have passed on before him, his place and help will never be forgotten. He was very generous in his gifts to the church. Having been with the church from its small gatherings in the old school house, he believed that God would ever care for it, and add to its membership such as should be saved. In all the changes that have come to this church, and to this community, his faith was never shaken. When his heart was bowed in sorrow as he looked for the last time into the faces of the noble men and women who have helped in this church work he believed the "Lord was in the midst of her, and that she should not be moved." When ministers came and went, he believed God would send other men who would help upbuild in truly holy things. How many times he turned his face towards this church repeating that thought of God himself. "God shall help her, and that right early." There is no better way in which we can truly perpetuate the memory of his prayers, his words of Christian cheer, his noble deeds, his generous gifts, than to have the same hopeful outlook for the future of the cause of Christ. Shall we not one and all here decide as we think of his noble life, "We will be constantly in our place of worship at every service, and help, with brave hearts, and smiling faces, in all the work God gives us to do?" If we do this, this second day of November will be a true red letter day in our lives, in whatever church we may worship, and wherever our lot in life may be cast.
....Our brother was reared to manhood in the home of the uncle at Orwell, Vt. who has already been mentioned. He was a diligent student in the public schools. He was not only willing to assist in the work on his uncle’s farm, but he helped in the saw and grist mills of this relative. Quietly, but thoroughly, he mastered the details of every line of work where he could be of service. Such a young man was sure to turn his face towards a State like ours. None of the tales of hardships our pioneers had met, or might meet, discouraged him in the least. On a bright spring day in 1861, with his family he emigrated to Smithfield Township, Fayette County, Iowa.
....He was engaged in farming here until the autumn of 1862. Then he went back to the Green Mountains, where he prospered well in agricultural pursuits. But in the autumn of 1867 he took the Iowa trail again. It was a dark drizzling day when he started. The mountains in all their grandeur were shut in by shrouding mists. Be he looked bravely westward. The uncle, who loved him as his own son, paced back and forth while the leaves of gold and red pattered about him as if all nature shared the sorrow of his parting with DeWitt.
...."My boy - when shall I see him again?" was his sharp questioning. The young man bent to him with his blessing. The older man knew that, wherever he might go, he would never forsake the path of God’s service. No word of counsel he had ever spoken to him had fallen on stony ground. Though mingled with tears, the blessing that was asked on this stalwart young man never lost its luster. No wonder that our State has won a name that is loved throughout the Union when to it have come from many homes here, and from across the seas, the strong, the prayerful, the true, the conscientious.
....At first our brother had the farm of eighty acres. But by his thrift, industry, and faith in God, he added to that original purchase until he owned the goodly farm of 240 acres in Smithfield township. In 1888, after years of eager and successful work, he removed to the home in Fayette which is so well known to everyone here. But his visits to the old farm were frequent, and for many years he could do vigorous work there. In 1890 he was chosen secretary of the Fayette Creamery Association and for many years served in that position with credit to himself and the satisfaction of the stockholders of the association. He also served as township trustee, clerk, tax collector and a member of the school board. In these and all other positions, he was faithful to the last degree.
....Our brother was married in St. Lawrence County, New York, October 15, 1856 to Miss Adelia P. Sheldon who was born at Hopkinton, N. Y., March 24, 1835. She was the daughter of Deacon John Sheldon, a man of noble, upright character. Thus our brother and sister have walked and worked together in the faith of our Lord and Master, as both gave their hearts to Him in early life, for more than sixty-five years. Three of the children were born in Orwell, Vermont, Martha Amelia, May Emma and Ralph Frank. One son, Fred Sheldon, was born in Smithfield, Iowa.
....The daughter, May Emma, was born January 7, 1860, and passed away October 27, 1860, so near in monthly date to the passing home of the father that one cannot but think how his mind dwelt upon it, and the little one waiting for him, as he knew he was soon to meet her. And while we linger here they are together in the land of eternal sunshine; and the blessings of a sainted child and of a God-fearing pilgrim, rest with you, dear mother, and dear children and grandchildren, as a most precious heritage, which no storm can wrest away, and no thing of earth tarnish.

Obit:  Dora Amelia Penhollow was born in Mallory Township, Clayton County, Iowa April 29, 1861, and from the vicissitudes of this mortal life at the family home in Fayette at ? o'clock Thursday evening 1923Jun07.
....She was one of a family of thirteen children, there being therin eight brothers and five sisters, of which there survive her four brothers, Roswell, of the state of Oregon, Ansell D. of Millville, Harrison of Arlington, and Ernest on the home farm near Garber.
...She became a member of the United Brethren church in her youth, and under the influence of these early religious experiences and the inspiration of the Christian faith and hope she lived her good life as wife, mother, friend and neighbor.
....Nov. 2, 1890, she was married to Fred S. Chittenden, who had won her love and with whom she had lived ideal companionship.
....Their children are five, who with her husband now keenly feel their loss, whatever all relations may be theirs in charitable memories of her and in the sympathies of friends. These children are Mrs. Grover Lambert, Mrs. Guy Tripp, Mrs. Huber Donaldson, Mrs. Malry Thompson and Sheldon Chittenden. There are seven grandchildren to be inspired worthily by the recollection and recital of her virtues.
....The home of the family has been upon the farm in Smithfield, until this fall when they removed to Fayette.
....Mrs. Chittenden had been ill since Christmas, but only for about two weeks had there been any minifestations of serious condition of the liver, causing her to keep her bed.
....Funeral services were conducted at the home in the north part of town (N of Main.St bridge) Sunday afternoon by Rev. Daniel Parker. Appropriate songs were sung by Profs. Crain and Van Ness and their wives. Interment was in Grandview, the bearers being George Chittenden, Ersu Clegg, A.L. Green???, Ed Langerman, W.E. Odekirk, F. Potter. There were present relatives from Arlington, Garber, Millville, Guttenberg, Postville, Oelwein, and Randalia.  Notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather from long continued a large concourse was gathered manifest love for the one departed and sympathy for the bereaved.

Obit:  Funeral Held Tuesday---Fred Sheldon Chittenden went home from his pump shop a few days ago, where he had been at work for 10 years. Then came the news Sunday morning early that he had finished life.He was born at the third son to DeWitt and Adelia Chittenden on the farm in Smithfield township, August 5, 1862. He was married to Dora Penhollow, Nov. 2, 1890 in Elkader. They resided for many years on farm the Chittenden home farm in Sec 9, Smithfield.Twp. Here the children were born, five surviving with the 15 grandchildren who have so often these later years like to come down to the corner of State and Union streets, where with his daughter, Mrs. Beryl Thompson, Fred had made his home. Mrs. Mae Lambert lives in Lima, Mrs.Winifred Tripp in Seattle, Wash., and Mrs Golda Donaldson and Sheldon Chittenden with postoffice at Fayette. Smithfield Township histories, 1878 & 1910

Smithfield.Twp, 1878 History of Fayette.Co.IA

....William Orrear and James Beatty settled on the  NW1/4 of NE1/4 of Section 5, Township 92, Range 8, in 1841 or 1842, and for two or three years were in the company, keeping "bach." About the middle of the " long and dreary Winter " of 1842-3, they were called upon to entertain a house full of company, the particulars of which are narrated elsewhere. In March, the cabin became a sanctuary for the fugitive children of Tegarden, who fled hither for shelter, and, from the door, could look out and see the lurid light from the fire that was destroying their home, in which was their father's dead body. Orrear married in due time and settled down to be an industrious farmer.  In 1846, when he sold his property, he had over eighty acres broken and fenced, and had, for two years, managed a dairy of 25 cows (transporting milk and butter on the Mission Trail, to Ft.Atkinson in Winneshiek.Co).
...William Van Dorn settled in this township in 1843, and three years after married Miss Messenger; the first wedding in Smithfield. Andrew Hensley settled within the present bounds of Smithfield in April 1844, and in 1845, sold a part of his crop of Winter wheat in Dubuque at the rate of $1.45 per bushel. Mr. Hensley purchased his groceries at this faraway market for several years, often exchanging honey therefor, which could be obtained in large quantities by the experienced frontiersmen. The first convenient post office to Mr. Hensley's was at Yankee Settlement (Edgewood), twenty-five miles away, but before 1849, his post office was at Dubuque. It is said that Mr. Hensley sent some of his children to school at Yankee Settlement before any school was established in Fayette County.
....The next settler in this township was Chauncey Brooks, who made this location in 1847. Mr. Brooks was a New Yorker by birth, but was raised in Canada. He came to Linn County in 1888, when only 21 years old, and was married to Hannah Casebeer two years before coming to Fayette County. Shortly after Mr. and Mrs. Brooks settled (1848), their daughter Amanda was born.  As mentioned in another place. Rev. John Brown held a religious meeting  in the Orrear house in 1848, probably the first sermon ever preached in Smithfield Township.
...The first schoolhouse was built on Section 1, in 1852 or 1853, and Lantha Hendrickson was the first teacher, but a school was taught in an Inn house, on the east line of the township, in the previous year.
...The township was organized in 1857. The voters present at the first school election in Smithfield Township, held at the house of William McNaoL, May 3, 1858, were J. A. Hoge, L. M. Stranahan, F. BaU, F. Hodges, William Bonlne, Ira Potter, George Guard, James Bonine, E. B. Nichols, and F. W. B. Stevenson. Harrison Grage, Thaddeos McNaol, J. A. Bonine, R. Gage. William McNaol, A. T. Liggett, and Charles Hoyt. Charles Hoyt was elected President; Elisha De Mott was elected Vice President, L. M. Stevenson, Secretary; A. J. Liggett, Treasurer.
...The next month, a special meeting was held, at which the questions of voting a two-mill tax for Teachers' Fund, two mills for School House Fund, and the obtaining of a loan of $12,000 were referred to the Board. March 12, 1860, the electors voted an eight-mill tax for schoolhouse purposes. In March, 1859, the application of Sub-District No 5 for $300 for school house construction was rejected; and, in 1863, its application for 1868 to complete its building was also refused. In 1864. No. 4 made an application for $500, which was declined, and No. 5's request for $l00, also. No. 5 again applied, in 1865. for $100. and was again refused, while No. 3's application for $100 shared the same fate. In 1866. No. 1 met with the same treatment, and in 1867, six of the Sub-Districts petitioned for cash, with a like result. In 1868, four sub-districts ditto. This continued until 1872.  When it is stated, there were no applications for schoolhouse purposes. The teachers during the Winter of 1871—2 were:  No. 1, O. N. Ainsworth; No. 2, Mary E. White ; No. 3, Sophia Z. Smith ; No. 4, Mary J. McCormick No. 5, Emma P. Hoge; No. 6, Rose A. Smith : No. 7, D. D. Adams : No. 8. Alice Payne ; No. 9, Emma A. Babcock.
...March 21, 1876, the voters of the township decided to adopt the Independent District system by a vote of 62 to 48. No official records of Smithfield before April 14, 1862. are in existence.  At that time, J. W. Hobson and William Pangbom, Trustees, met and appointed William Price to the vacancy caused by the other Trustee having neglected to qualify. Charles Green was the Clerk. z

Smithfield.Twp, 1910 History of Fayette.Co.IA

.....William 0rrear and James Beatty located in Smithfield.Twp, Sec 3, and being unmarried men, lived together and kept “bach.” It was their cabin that sheltered the Teagarden children after the murder of their father and little brother, as mentioned elsewhere in this volume. Orrear married and became a successful farmer and dairyman.
.....Wm Van Dorn settled here in 1843 and three years later wed Miss Messenger, the first wedding in Smithfield.
.....Andrew Hensley became a resident of the township in 1844. The next year, he hauled a portion of his crop of winter wheat to Dubuque and sold it for one dollar and forty-five cents per bushel. Dubuque was his trading point and postoffice until 1849, and when a store and postoffice was established at Yankee Settlement (Edgewood), twenty-five miles away, he felt that he was almost living in town. Mr. Hensley sent some of his children to school at Yankee Settlement before there was a school established in Fayette County. (He located his land on the line between Fairfield and Smithfield in 1842.)
.....Chauncey Brooks, a young man of twenty-one, brought his bride to Smithfield township in 1847, and in 1848, their daughter, Amanda, was born.  This was the first birth in the township and a close rival for first birthday honors in the county.
.....Rev. John Brown held a religious meeting in the Orrear cabin in 1848, probably the first gospel sermon preached in the township.
.....The first land entry made in Fayette County was made in this township 011 the 17th of January, 1847, as appears of record. This was the William Orrear and James Beatty claim, which was entered by Horace Bemis. It was in the extreme northern limit of the surveyed lands in the county.
.....Smithfield was one of the four townships in this county acquired through the Black Hawk purchase, and was surveyed by Orson Lyon in the summer
of 1837. The sub-dividing lines were established by James Videtto in the same time.
.....While there were numerous settlers in Smithfield in the forties, gradually increasing with passing years, the formal organization of the township did not occur until 1858, as shown by the following order of the county court:
........“That township 92 north, range 8 west, be, and the same is hereby formed in a new township, for all purposes, as contemplated by law. Said first election is ordered to be held at the house formerly occupied by Joseph Hobson, in said township; and that Alden Mitchell is hereby appointed to discharge the duties, as required by law, necessary to organize said township; said election to take place on the first Monday of April, 1858, at nine o’clock A. M.; and that there be elected three township trustees, one clerk, two justices of the peace, one constable, and a vote to be taken, also, for school fund commissioner. Said township to be called Smithfield.” The reader is referred to the article on early history in the Miscellaneous chapter for further discussion of events in this locality. The writer of that article was a participant in the history recorded, and tells it in his own quaint and interesting style.  Though lacking the formal organization to fully legalize their proceedings, the people of Smithfield had a nominal organization, and public affairs were carried forward for some years before the county court came to their rescue.
.....A schoolhouse was established on section No. 1 in 1852, but a school had been taught in a settler's house the previous year. The schoolhouse mentioned above was to accommodate the patrons of the “farmhouse” school. Iantha Hendrickson was the first teacher in the new schoolhouse.
.....The first school election in Smithfield township was held at the house of William McNaul, May 3, 1858. The voters participating in this election were J. A. Hogue, L. M. Stranahan, F. Ball, F. Hodges, William Bonine, Ira Potter, George Guard, James Bonine, E. B. Nichols, T. W. B. Stevenson, Har¬ rison Gage, A. T. Liggett, and Charles Hoyt. The last named was elected president, Elisha De Mott, vice-president, L. M. Stranahan, secretary, and A. T. Liggett, treasurer.
........By this time (1858), there was a considerable settlement in the township, and every neighborhood wanted a schoolhouse, or at least all wanted to be the first in the distribution of such favors. Applications were made apparently, without any consideration of results, should all be granted, and it was fortunate for the people that they had elected a conservative and far-seeing board of directors. This restriction as to expenditures for school houses, which was hardly justifiable during all the years that it was kept up, finally led to the abandonment of the district township system and the adoption of the rural, independent schools, as now in vogue in the township. But this change did not occur until 1876, at which time there were nine schools in the township.
.....During the year ending July 1909 (the latest official report), there was school taught in 9 of the 10 school houses in the township, an average of eight months, by female teachers, who received an average of $35.75 per month. District No.10 had but two months school, paying the teacher $35 per month. (The average daily attendance in this school was 6.)
.......There are 245 pupils of school age in the township, of whom two hundred and two were enrolled in the schools, with a total average daily attendance of 122 in the township. The estimated value of the ten school houses is $4675. (One of these is reported as worth $25 dollars.) The school libraries contain 809 volumes, and the school apparatus is valued at $515.
.....Religious services were held in the homes of the people or in the schoolhouses from the coming of the first pioneers until the building of churches in 1876. . There were classes of the Methodist Episcopal and United Brethren denominations organized in early days, and they maintained their identity and religious zeal throughout the discouragements that met all pioneer enterprises. In 1876, each of these societies erected a comfortable church building and was usually supplied with pastors from nearby towns.
.....Among the early settlers of Smithfield, none were more prominent in the development of its agricultural resources than the family of James Smith. Mr. Smith came to Smithfield in the early 1850s, locating on the bleak prairie with not a house or tree within the range of human vision. He entered a large tract of land, accumulating as the years passed, until he had over a thousand acres. He was one of the organizers of the township, which was named in his honor. His children, and especially his daughters, were successful teachers in their home township and elsewhere for many years.
.....Among other early pioneers who have been identified with this section of the county, were J. W. Hobson, William Pangburn, William Price, the Babcock family at Bear Grove (of whom one son, Q. C. Babcock, is a prominent resident of Fayette), J. E. Budd, also of Fayette, Charles Hoyt, who Was county surveyor for many years, and father of the late Judge W. A. Hoyt, G. W. Baker, D. P. Dawson, D. W. Chittenden, F. Snedigar, A. Mitchell, Lyman E. Mitchell, Richard Badger, John Bills, James Conrad who, with five brothers, served in the Union army, Andrew Harkin, Joseph Hahn, Finley Smith, William Thompson, D. Underwood. It is not assumed that the foregoing is a complete list of early settlers of Smithfield, as the preparation of such a list seems impossible at this late date.
.....There is no town or village within the boundaries of Smithfield township, the nearest market points being Arlington, 3 miles east, Maynard, 2 miles west, and Fayette, about the same distance north, these distances being calculated from the respective township boundaries. Seaton post office was once located in the southern part of the township, but this has given place to the rural free delivery system, now so universally in vogue throughout the country districts.
.....This is distinctively a prairie township in which there is little timber except that artificially grown. It is rolling prairie land, very fertile, and in a high state of improvement. Dairying and stock-raising is the principal business in which the prosperous farmers are engaged.
......The resources of this township, and the value of its property for taxation purposes, are shown below :
.........Of the Davenport & St. Paul branch of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad, there are 4.82  miles traversing the northeast corner, valued for assessment purposes at nineteen thousand two hundred dollars;
.........the Western Union Telegraph Company has the same mileage, and is assessed on the basis of three hundred and eighty-six dollars in the township; there are three telephone companies in operation.
.........The Iowa Telephone Company has 10 miles of line, valued at nine hundred and fifty dollars; the Interstate has 6 miles, valued at three hundred and twenty-three dollars, and the Corn Belt Company operates 20 miles of line in Smithfield, valued at eight hundred and thirty-seven dollars.
.........The total assessed valuation of Smithfield township for the year 1909 was two hundred and eighty-one thousand one hundred and fifty dollars.
