Mill.Grove/McAlavey Cemetery
Lost cemetery on west side of Brush Creek in sec 3,
Fairfield.Twp, near the Illyria.Twp line.
…Suspected surnames buried in the Mill.Grove Cemetery are Rowley,
Gardner/Gardiner, Jonathan Cline, two infants of Solon Barnes, bz/2008.
...West.Union.Argo, 1909Apr06:
"People were very much startled recently to see a coffin protruding from the
bank of Brush Creek about 20ft above the creek bed in section 3 of Fairfiled.Twp,
several miles north of Arlington, and close to Wadena. Through Supervisor
Walrath the matter has been looked up in its legal aspects, and referred to the
board of health. William McLavey, an old settler, recalls the fact that
the cemetery was located there about fifty years ago, some of the bodies buried
there being those of Mr. Rowley, members of the
Gardner/Gardiner family, and possibly Jonathan Cline. The present
generation did not know the place had ever been used for a burial ground.
…Paper article of April 8, 1909.
"Quite a little excitement was occasioned by the fact that an old burying ground
of some of the very earliy settlers of this township (Fairfield and Illyria) was
found by some parties down near Rawson’s Mill by the fact that one coffin stuck
out of the ground about a foot and a half. The burying ground is on what was the
old William McAlavy farm and Mr. McAlavy (this is likely son Charles as William
died in 1892. Charles the liveryman in Wadena, may have taken over the farm for
awhile?) who has been confined to his bed for several years is the only source
of information in regard to these early pioneers of this part of Iowa. Mr.
McAlavy says he remembers the people and that the last burial was made in this
little plot about 54 years ago (1865). When the bodies were buried they were a
good ways from Brush Creek but it has been continually changing its course and
wearing away the bank until it has undermined these graves and the black walnut
casket with boards abut an inch and a half thick sticks out of the side of the
Brush Creek bank, about seven feet up. There are signs that still others are
buried there and uless something is done the entire outfit will be washed into
the creek. The lower bones of the body in the coffin exposed are gone and the
bone from the knew to the thigh measured one and a half feet long. Whether the
remainder of the bones from the knee up still remain was not ascertained as Mr.
Holderson who was sent by supervisor Walrath to investigate could not see. It is
said that last summer parts of human skeletons were found along the creek. These
coffins were seen floating down the creek. The coffins were made of rough native
black walnut and were very heavy and have stood the test of time remarkably
well.
…As nearly as can be learned David Rowley, a son of one of the buried bodies,
lives at Albia, Iowa. It is said that two or three persons by the name of Garner
were also buried in this place. Also a man by the name of Cline and other who no
one remembers now. The bank where the coffin protrudes from is twenty feet high
and it is about seven feet up this bank that the grewsome relic is seen.
…The burying ground is located almost on the Illyria and Fairfield township line
in section 3, of this township (Fairfield). It has been known by the old
residents down that way that this burial ground was there but it was not known
that the creek was doing such work by the county officials until the sheriff was
notified and township trustees of this township notified.
...The people buried here must have been located there before the county was
organized and it is probable that if any records of them were ever made they
were burned with the old Fayette county court house when it was consumed.
…They probably located down there near Mill Grove when the nearest railroad
point was Manchester or Dubuque and when the wild game was plenty in those
parts..
…The finding of this body created no little excitement and the matter will be
taken up by the board of supervisors this week and the remains well be properly
cared for. In the meantime our people who are apt to strole along Brush Creek at
this particular point will be careful what they pick up.

Do not trust as totally valid any tree/report data. Often World Connect or
Ancestry trees/data were utilized as a foundation upon which to add material
gleamed from obits, articles, histories, biographies, stories, burials, censuses
and other data collected. My primary interest is generally the pioneer
history and includes linking village and neighborhood surnames together for several of the early generations. Family connections, locations and other
data may have to be speculated in order to continue a complex series of
inter-related projects. My web pages are primarily personal study projects
for note keeping, but can also jump start others. I have a huge number of
projects started and rarely return to edit/update material unless interest is
rekindled. Any web pages online are usually linked off the 'Index Page.'
Numerous projects are not put on web pages but are in draft form or in the form
